one of my cartridges, the large black one, i think, is pigment based. Don't know if my generic cartridge is also pigment.
faint print=almost dry. Only an issue if you plan to refill cartridge, or if you need to trade in a GOOD cartridge to get a reman. one.
Some low warnings are designed to come on too soon.
Ink useage is mostly a calculation from amount of printing. At least no cartridge I know of actually measures the ink level. That's why HP see-through carts are a bonus over sponge filled opaque ones.
i got warning when last tank was low. But this is brand new tank. no warning indicated or received. Wondering if i damaged something by using old tank when it was too low. (didn't replace it right away cuz i know there's still in those babies after warning, but don't know how much. Wasn't sure if Canon warning was true, that continuing to use ink tank would damage something. Now i understand it IS true. Got too low?) Also don't know if Canon's claim that generic inks can mess up the machine.
can plug up the jets, not the machine. A new cart. should not be faint, check the date on the box, clean print nozzles.
No, running a cart too low should not affect the next new-refilled-reman. one.
I have been using ink cartridge refills in my Epson 880 for more than two years, with no problems. I do a lot of letters and documents, plus some colour ....mostly printing web pages etc.... and find the colour ok for general purposes. I have never made the comparison between colour docs printed with refilled ink and those from new ones. I guess there may be some difference, but for general purposes the refilled ink is certainly good enough for me. Yes, filling the cartridge is a tad messy but I get better at it over time. It certainly beats paying out exorbitant sums for new cartridges all the time.

I had a lot of problems with HP imitation cartridges or refilling myself. But with a Canon ip4000, it is pretty easy to refill each individual tank. I love it and the cost is cheap. I bought the refill materials from Atlantic ink, and they have good supplies.
I have an Epson 880 and would like to try refilling. Which brand of ink do you use and where do you buy it?
I use Canon printers. I use to refill my own cartridges. They worked well and never had a problem. Over the last probably 10 years Canon hasn't changed their cartidge. I kept upgrading my printer and using my refilled cartridges. There was only one nagging problem. My colors didn't match. Especially blue/purple. Photos always sucked. I read a lot about color matching trying to figure out if it was just the state of the art or if there was a solution. Reading reviews they seemed to get better color than I did. Then during one of my printer upgrades, I noticed that the colors were perfect. Thought I finially got the perfect printer. Then when the new cartridges emptied and I started using my refilled ones, I noticed the color was off. I've never gone back to refilling cartridges.
I have had great success in refilling my own cartridges. I purchased a kit at Costco, making sure it listed my particular brand(HP), and followed the instructions included. The only problem is resetting the ink level estimate. I now have three sets of cartridges, and as I recycle them the ink level resets every time as the printer can only remember two cartridges at a time. There is not much mess, I utilize a white cotton lint free rag to cover the work surface, and you must NEVER rub or slide the discharge area of the cartridge against the rag or any other surface. If there is some leaking from that area of the cartridge, BLOT the cartridge on the rag until it stops. If there is built up ink residue on the cartridge, use a soft Q-tip(like the ones for cleaning tape heads) and some head cleaning fluid or denatured alcohol or the cleaning fluid provided in some of the refill kits. This cleaning must be done VERY GENTLY to prevent damage to the ink nozzles on the cartridge. Using great care and patience, you can refill cartridges several times before the fail and save some money, although I find the cost of HP cartridges to be about the lowest.
Good luck!
Personally, I have never tried it. I was very tempted and even bought a kit advertised on the KimKom...site. At work, we tried refilled ink cartridges that were done by a refill company for our HP inkjets (which is what I have always used) at a great savings, but, they never worked well/or at all. So, the company went back to new, and I finally took my kit to Goodwill.
I used to refill the cartridges...messy job. Now I buy a new printer (Lexmark) with both cartridges included for LESS money than the the cartridge packages cost.
i use a connon multi-pass f-60 and i agree that refilling is a messy nightmare, but i ran across refill kits that are already have the suringe attatched so all you have to do is push down into the cartridge, no extracting from the jar for they are already connected, they are from universal ink jet has anyone tried these, they look so easy to use and am wondering if they are before i buy them, it's about 12.00 for 2 ready made suringes of each color excluding black any one use these yet?
I have a Espon Stylus Photo R300 printer (w/6 cartrides) and a Brother MFC-3820CN printer (w/4 cartridges) and discovered a website a little over two years ago that sells remanufactured & new cartridges. I have been using the remanufactured cartridges, at a significant savings per cartridge, and have had excellent results. Once had a problem with a black cartridge-emailed them and they sent me a replacement at NO charge. The company is located in Tigard, Oregon and their website is: www.inkquik.com. Give them a try---I think you will be greatly surprized by their fast service and their excellent products!! I told family and friends about this website and they all use inkquik now too.
I just went there, and gotta say thanks! I'll try them soon.
I found that great ink website by checking out Cnet website. Wanted info on different printers that Cnet might recommend and discovered inkquik by accident--best accident I've ever had!! Also for your info--inkquik puts in one or two pieces of candy with every order---the candy is great too. Enjoy saving money with inkquik!!
