by valentine39 - 9/30/05 6:34 AMHow does the ISP determine what speed my connection will be? My 56K modem may connect anywhere from 40kbs to 48kbs at any time of day, it varies. My 33.6 modem also has the variable connect speed. What's going on?

You have supplied a copious amount of data. Some answers and some more questions. So, the electronis capabilities of the wire pair determine connect speed. Can I infer that when the connect speed slows down or speeds up a different pair to the CO is being used? If so, where is the split made between my house and the CO. Boy do I wish my area had fibre to the house!! We're so deep in the sticks that that will never happen. CO is about 5 miles away so no DSL either. We are at the edge of cell coverage so can't go that rout either. Stuck with connect speed between 41 and 48 kbs on the 56K modem. Much less and just as variable on the 33K modem. Thought USRobotics would help. It doesn't do any better than the cheap noname modem. Never have seen a conect speed above 48K during travels with the laptop.
To catch a fish is to eat a meal. Th learn to fish will make it possible to feed a family and provide hours of enjoyment. Are you a fisherman?

by martylk2 - 12/18/05 7:03 AM In reply to: Thanks for the info. by valentine39is to not use any line splitters. If you have any attached to the line socket...where the line comes into your dwelling...remove it. You'll likely see a 2 to 4 KB increase in speed.

My other desk top with a new USRobotics 56K modem only runs at 44kbps, better than the 33.2 kbps that it used to with the old modem.
