Why isnt AMD winning?

by Jedi_1 - 11/29/05 4:47 PM

I used to think that the computer market was the least corrupt of all businesses until a few months ago when I discovered that AMD's superior CPUs were being shunned in favor of Intel ships. Only HP and a few other PC makers were using AMD chips(its still like that). While Opteron crushed Xeon in the server and super-computer markets(they took a large part of Intels share) none of AMD's clearly superior chips are being adopted for wide-spread use. Is Intel using bully tactics and price-fixing to lock AMD out or are AMD's new chips too expensive and esoteric for the general user?

AMD is suing Intel over exactly that...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 11/29/05 5:02 PM In reply to: Why isnt AMD winning? by Jedi_1

Back in June, AMD sued Intel claiming that Intel was/is "using illegal scare tactics and coercion to keep computer manufacturers from using AMD processors." Intel has since made several statements that while they do utilize some of the tactics that AMD claimed, the ones the use are perfectly legal, and the rest they have nothing to do with. (They claim the reason AMD doesn't hold a large percentage of the market is that companies simply prefer Intel's performance, reliability, and pricing. To that I say Intel strikes out, but that's just me.) There hasn't been much out of either camp the last several months, but they are both still actively gathering evidence and preparing for what should be a pretty good mudfight.

Hope this helps,
John

When we call it winning or losing

and add the cost of all the lawyers that get involved, we consumers pay the legal fees. Regardless of who is "victorious" in the courts, we lose.

AMD is great!

by kewlman - 11/29/05 7:33 PM In reply to: Why isnt AMD winning? by Jedi_1

I've used AMD for years, and i recommend them to all of my customers but there are some people that live Intel, and that is all they use. It comes down to user preference at the end and what CPU they are comfortable with. i'll always use AMD and recommend them to my customers.

Production Capacity

by Olds - 11/30/05 5:08 AM In reply to: Why isnt AMD winning? by Jedi_1

Part of the reason that AMD gets passed over when it comes to large computer companies, such as Dell, is their production capacity.

Even though they do make a great product, they still can't make nearly as many processors as Intel. Having enough supply is something that large companies don't want to worry about.

However, AMD just opened a new fabrication facility in Germany so hopefully they will be catching up soon. And any unfair business practices on Intels part can hopefully be solved as well.

well its simple

by sirfragalot - 12/1/05 2:51 PM In reply to: Why isnt AMD winning? by Jedi_1

they are the new kids on the block so most companies have contracts with certian tech firms and etc. and have contracts with intel so once people really get the oppertunity to change the more in likely will

but intel has been along time so most people have formed emetional ties or thoughts of quality ect.. so its kind of like coke v pepsie you may have grown up on coke and hated pepsie but now that your older it either cemeted your taste for coke or made you want to swich to peosie so only time will tell

It is now

by Ray Harinec - 12/3/05 9:19 AM In reply to: Why isnt AMD winning? by Jedi_1

Maximum PC mag, Dec 05 issue, page 12.
that for desktops, AMD for the entire month of Sept captured 52% of the U.S. retail desktop sales vs Intel's 46 %.

So smile and be happy.

That figure does not include major pc manufacturers

by Olds - 12/5/05 7:11 AM In reply to: It is now by Ray Harinec

I read an article similar to that and it stated that those sales figures did not include companies like Dell or Gateway.

That figure is for sales by smaller PC companies and places like ZipZoomFly or New Egg.

So there are alot more intel processors sold than AMD processors.
