windows 98 display problem

by SeaSaltJenny - 11/29/05 8:45 AM

I bought this pc in 1999 with windows 98SE on it. My daughter did something to it, not sure what, but it was completely blank, then her boyfriend got it to boot up, (not sure what he did, he said something about reformatting) but now it only has 16 colors on the display, and now my daughters name is on the pc and not mine, I think he may have used his own disk, and not mine. I have the original windows 98 disk that came with it but still can't figure out how to install it or fix the display. The computer is an AMD K6 I used to have 500 something in RAM but now it only says 300 something, (my other daughter may have taken some memory for her computer, thinking my computer was junked) also used to have a 2 behind the K6 not sure why that would change, I'm very computer illiterate and any help would be greatly appreciated. I really would like to see photos and videos again. I already lost all of my programs and files, so reformating again is an option, just don't know how to do it. I have a DSL connection, if you could help me and need more information please ask. I'll be checking this board off and on all day trying to figure this out. Thanks in advance, Jenny

Drivers. . .

by Coryphaeus - 11/29/05 8:59 AM In reply to: windows 98 display problem by SeaSaltJenny

are needed for the video display and sound. You need to find out what type of video and sound is used. It will either be "on board" on the motherboard or a seperate video card and audio card plugged into one of the PCI slots on the MB.

W98SE does not have drivers for video or audio.

If you start out with "about" 500 (512) MB of RAM and remove 128 you get "about" 300 (384). Sounds like she removed a RAM stick. W98SE will work fine with 384.

To reformat and reinstall W98SE you need a boot floppy and the W98CD. Let us know if you have the floppy and we'll go from there.

Have disk and floppy

by SeaSaltJenny - 11/29/05 9:11 AM In reply to: Drivers. . . by Coryphaeus

Yes, I have the 98SE CD disk and the floppy "Startup disk" that came with the pc, but it says "Do not use before consulting technical support"
I have no idea how to tell what a video card is or what onboard means, the guts of the computer are foreign to me. Will the drivers be on the floppy disk? Should I reformat? How do I do that? Thank you so much for helping! Jenny

How do I format?

by SeaSaltJenny - 11/29/05 10:30 AM In reply to: windows 98 display problem by SeaSaltJenny

I tried to boot up the pc with the windows 98 disk in the e: drive and the floppy start up disk in the a: drive, I tried to type in format at the c: prompt. and it says "required parameter missing" I have no idea what the heck I'm doing, do I even need to reformat? Is that even how you format? What am I supposed to do? I tried to update the display adaptor, also the monitor driver, I tried to change the color profile, nothing is working. Please help, my son has sent me photos of my new grandson, and I can't see any photos in my mail. How do I get more than 16 colors in my display? I'm so lost, any help greatly appreciated, Jenny

Jenny, Remember, A Reformat Will Wipe The Drive

by Grif Thomas Moderator - 11/29/05 11:46 AM In reply to: Thank you! by SeaSaltJenny

...Any pictures personal documents that you saved on the computer will be gone...You'll need to restore them to the computer later from backup CD's that you have created before the format.

Hope this helps.
