Hi Folks;
I;m new to DSL and have a Security question maybe one of you can help me out with.I have SBC/Yahoo DSL and am currently using AVG Free and ZA free.
I got a notice on my sbc home page that sbc/yahoo DSL is offering their own security protection with AV and Firewall. From what I read it is EZ Trust from CA.
The Question I have is am I better off with my current security configuration or will this CA EZ Trust give me more protection?
I am using Win 98se
192mb Ram
Thanks in advance and I do enjoy reading the forums here they are very informative.
you more protection and probably more things to do... but,
Are you willing to buy or pay for the protection?
Are those protection is in their side (server) or its should be install in your pc?
There are no such single application that can protect you.... use as many as you can handle (to configure correctly, daily/weekly update, scan, etc.)
Beside, windows 98 is almost non supported by MS anymore.... I suggest that you upgrade to windows xp if possible... (or maybe you want to wait for Windows Vista?)
anyway, have a nice weekend.
This is the AV Suite that sbc/yahoo includes free to those that are customers.
My natural instincts say to keep what you've got if they're giving you no problems. (I use AVG Free also). Then I saw you're using 98SE which makes me wonder since space & program size are so critical for your OS. But....
I have NO faith or trust in anything Yahoo (or AOL or Msn or..) which pushes me back to my original thought.
I think I've noticed that these ISP connected sites w/ their cross breeding for profits are being a little disingenious with their anti-spyware which removes competetors spyware but ignores THEIR OWN spyware they plant while trying to make you feel secure (LOL).
Last night, Hotmail downloaded a ''tracking cookie'' on me which got past my CCleaner & Spybot Bad Download Blocker and caused machine to crash & freeze all the way down to Bios level !! Took 1/2 hour to clean up enough to get to login screen. Have seen similar via them from Mediaplex & Adfarm which also crashed computer. The ONLY thing (& MS Update) I ever use IE for is Hotmail and problem was in IE cache (attempted to change system memory settings).
Yahoos touted AV allowed 3 copies of a Trojan, Supposedly for free AV, spoofed from Net-Integration[who'd been hacked] through so enough said there. See Link below for another Suprise Idea:

I repeat: NO faith !! Keep what you got & be happy!! Just MHO !! ![]()
I use w98.
When I test protection progs one of the things I look for is footprint. (think resources,,important with w98)
I use CA AV because of the small footprint (AVG might be equal or better, never tried it) and it seems to coexist with this old OS without causing a fuss.
Firewall.. I tested ZA and what I found was a big footprint and it was a HD space eater. (unless you want to ride herd on all the logs it keeps)
found size critical and so used Kerio v 2.15 as the smallest reputable one I could find. I beleive it's no longer available from Kerio. It was only 2.16 Megs versus current version (free 'til year end) at 5.1 megs.
Given that, I figured if he's already got ZA and used the space then might as well keep as Sygate is also up there & even Outpost 1 is 4.5 megs. Sad to say I couldn't find a dwnld of Kerio2.15 via Google tho I have a copy in my docs folder.

Click on link below and then on link in post to get download of Kerio 2.15. Worth having in your docs for future possible install (get before it's no longer available anywhere) approx 1/3 size of ZA. Enjoy! :-):

Hi Thanks for the link to Kiero Firewall.I tried the SBC/Yahoo CA AV they were offering it is not bad.But I had to reinstall AVG for now because between the AV and Zone Alarm my MSCONFIG was getting up there with too many programs.
I have a Question regarding Kiero.Once they stop support. How will I keep it upgraded etc..It is worth a try if it is not a resource Hog.
This computer I am using it on is a second computer that relatives or friends can use so the cost of upgrading to XP is not worth it.But I do want to have strong protection.
Thanks alot in advance

and I'm not sure that type of firewall really needs much upgrading. Unfortunately, their newer versions add bells & whistles bulking up the resources draw. Mind you, for little money you can get a router (effectively a hardware firewall)(my wired D-link was $19 Canadian) but it won't prevent a trojan already on system from calling out. You can protect up to 4 computers sharing net access behind it. Saving a second net connection fee paid for router in 1st month. I think with Kerio protecting the outbound & router blocking all unrequested inbound you'd be reasonably safe (with money left for X-Mas!!). ![]()
Well, from the start, you are in trouble, you may like Windows 98, mainly beause you have used it so long, but if you are intersested in security, then you need to upgrade to windows XP, no comparison with Win98. then if you upgrade every time Yahoo tells you you will really be in trouble. Keep what you have updated and you will be just fine. I jus happen to think from expierence that if you up graded to XP and put security on you will be 10 times better off.
You are already better off with DSL than Cable security wise as with the DSL you don't share your bandwidth until you hit the Telco Central Office. With Cable you are sharing with everyone on your loop. With the right software they could possibly see what you are doing online.
I believe you would be better off keeping what you have and adding to it. I use AVG free and it works well for me. I also use ZoneAlarm Free with no problems. Do not use more than 1 anti-virus program as they can bump heads and bring down your system. You can use more than one Anti-Spyware program though.
Just as an example, I use Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and Adaware 1.06 Personal. I also use the Bazooka scanner but it doesn't actually take the spyware out for you, it tells you how and then you have to actually delete files and hack the registry. I don't use any software that costs money and have had no problems. Of course I am very careful about what I download and the sites I go to. The problem is that everyone makes mistakes. The programs mentioned have kept me out of trouble so far.
Hope this helps.
