Cyber Snakes

by NoCindy - 9/13/05 10:41 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Someone should come with a virus and a few worms to infect them with. So they would kind of have to stay in the can for so much longer than anyone would wish, if you get my drift.

It's not black and white

by theUg - 9/13/05 10:54 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Some of it is good, actually. It keeps security techology experts on their toes. Most of viruses are written "for fun" and is a good excersize for anti-virus makers or other specialists.

A lot of time hackers attack specific systems not out of malicious intent, but for findig out and pointing at the vulnerabilities, which actual villans might use with that very malicious intent. Good hackers do that hard way, so those "security professionals" had to truly earn their living. ;)

virus writers are helping? i think not

by bw49 - 11/25/05 6:05 PM In reply to: It's not black and white by theUg

I hear this excuse for virus writing, that it's a "good exercise" to keep security professionals on their toes, and to expose or prove security holes in software.

Bull...

If that were the case, they could prove it with a small, controlled, limited-scope virus that infected 4 machines and stopped. That would expose the holes in any system. But that's not what viruses do....they run rampant, looking to infect as many machines as possible. They never contact the owner of the infected machine, explaining that they were part of a "test".

I've spent hundreds of dollars over the last 10 years for software to block viruses. I've spent hundreds of hours of my time with vaccinations, preventions, repair, clean up. I don't buy my computers so I can waste time with someone else's criminal activities.

I would put them in prison (not jail, Federal prison) for not less than a year, put a felony on their record, strip them of any future security access or any future well-paying job.

prision is no good for cybercrime criminals

by Xaan - 9/13/05 11:29 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Specialists should not be put to prisions where there are full of other criminals. Putting the two together is marketing the specialists and enble other criminals to make use of their skills to do other crimes....
it will be too risky...
(it will be just like IBX selling their technology to the Nazi back then.... or like Yahoo China passing on customer data to China authorities, or like Cisco and other IT companies selling technology to China authorities to block PRC citizens to view www democratic information or other "sensitive" criticism
against the party...)

Maybe the government can set up special teams to counsel them and divert them to use their talents working for the government? Some of the cybercrime criminals can be just youngsters and they can be remoulded and taught to think and contribute more positively to the society.

Community service -- big time

by tygerlili - 9/13/05 11:44 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

These people have created extreme inconvenience... Prison might work but better would be to spend time repairing the damage they have created... serving time repairing the systems of charities and other organisations who cannot afford to repair the mess they (and others like them) have made .... and for periods of several years -

Jail might punish them but it wont repair the damage - and maybe after they have straightened out the mess made each year by hackers and malware programmers they might have a better appreciation of why IT JUST ISNT FUNNY!

A fitting Punishment!

by auntetr - 9/13/05 11:48 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Insert electronic anal probe. Attach electronic clamps to genitals. Have them attempt to solve problems on the computer before time runs out and they get a severe jolt...inside and out. Not to kill, just to hurt like hell. OH YEAH...THE COMPUTER WOULD BE INFECTED WITH VIRUSES THAT WOULD IMPEDE PERFORMANCE OF THEIR TASKS...RESULTING IN THEIR GETTING THE SHOCKS! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Then they would know what its like to be unable to use your computer as it should be.

Mean People Suck! : }

DEATH to Virus Creators (smirk)...not really however,

by Choyce2010 - 9/14/05 12:04 AM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

These ''virus creators'' should be sent to prison the total amount of hours it takes to ''undo'' all the evil they have created by sending viruses to victims. Also, 20 years should be added to their sentences on behalf of all humankind & just on ''general principles''.

Nearly everyone knows someone who has been ''infected'' or taken advantage of by these BA$TARD$, they should know better by now, but one of the reasons people continue to create havoc is b/c ''white collar crime'' is NEVER dealt with as harsh as most other crimes. Time to change that & start sentencing these ''scumbags'' to some REAL HARD time & that should start harsher sentencing laws & w/a big burly prison mate by the name of BUBBA, err, perhaps then they will really know how it feels to reallyy get screwed by someone they don't even know (yet..~).

Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion.

Prison sentence

by mswinchatt - 9/14/05 12:04 AM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

For the misery and damage they cause, I think the prison sentence should be at least 25 years and a complete ban on ever having computers again! In fact, they should be tagged so that if they go near any computer, it lets of a siren and alerts the authorities! Not sure how practical this woud be, but might deter them. I say might, as nothing much seems to right now and for all those you punish, more popp up rather like the terror cell groups we have problems with.
Marion.
