I work at a help desk. Most of the time, the problems are PEBKAC errors: Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair!
Personal experience - I have caused many of my own problems by not knowing exactly what to do or how to do things. Many software packages and download software does not have complete instructions on what to do or how to handle certain problems and what might cause a compatibility problem.
Most of the problems I have encountered can be described as a conflict between what I want to do and what Microsoft wants me to do. They have a strangle hold on the industry and deliberately make it difficult for third party software to work easily on their systems particularly those that compete with their inferior products, like browsers, media players and now security software. There is only one solution to these problems and that is a viable alternative to Windows.
I have known for years what has caused most of my computer problems
1)my own ineptitude
2)the wee folk;the're always around, but its usually hiding socks in the laundry but once in a while they will venture into computer land and cause mayhem!!of course you must have at least a part of Scotland in you to understand that.........
The largest problem is that most folk don't read all the pertinent info about the prog before buying, then not reading the docs after they do buy and before installing; there lies madness!!!
Well... I'm pretty good at fixing computer problems and the source of the difficulty is usually me.
All of the above except the Gremlins.
End users just don't know enough about all of the settings, features & options to handle all the problems that come up. I am the in-house techie for 25-30 people, and most of the questions I get are super-easy - for me. However - I put a lot of the blame on the software manufacturers, for loading their products with features rather than making the programs stable and easy-to-use.
Maybe each program should have levels to turn on or off - depending on user knowledge - where you would only have access to the features at that level so you couldn't screw up. You could move to the next level when you were ready. The way things are now it's too easy to change options without realizing it.
Most people only use 5% of the features available to them and the over-installations just bog down systems and create extra conflicts. Adding to this problems are the poor uninstallers delivered with the software.
I've only had a computer since 1996. I know quite a bit, but never enough. I took time and paid attention to how programs worked and what I did at my keyboard. Most endusers (and I KNOW I'M RIGHT ABOUT THIS)...DON'T take the time to really learn about the programs they use or the programs they haphazardly d/l from the web; nor do they especially know the basics about how their hardware functions and...well their OS's work. Hmmm...endusers are always at fault more so than the computers.
I bought a (supposedly) high-end computer (HP Pavilion Presario 6000) with a 2 year extended warranty from CompUSA. Totalled about 1 grand w/o monitor....already haddit.Within 2 months Hard drive failed,1 month down. Replaced;warranty didn't cover recovering files. Sloooooow performance. Now I have been in computers since the late 70's, so I am not entirely stupid. Take it back in....bios chip is 'slightly' corrupted. Waaaiiiit for part.Six weeks. Decide to upgrade memory from 512 to 768. HP sends me to 3rd party to buy memory. Install. Computer dysfunctions; then malfunctions. Seems that new chip has taken out motherboard with a short circuit(?!!); oh, wait, it's also taken out the new hard drive. Re-format. Lost most files, but have backed up most on secondary hard drive this time. New motherboard.....new drive.4 weeks in shop. 4 months later...acting funky again. Take it to local repair shop. Diagnosis? Underpowered powered source. Cheap as possible motherboard and drive. Weak ventilation/overheating of RAM.
Technician cannibalized for better parts, boosted clock, more RAM, better motherboard. Result? Bulletproof system with NO problems since day one!
Note to ALL out there; for what it's worth:
CompUSA is owned by a MEXICAN company called the Bayer Brothers. If you don't believe me, then you can do the research yourself; but it's a fac', Jack. And that bothers me on a gut level.
Add into that that most 'tech support' is conducted in India or possibly Canada (a little better)
It still doesn't make up for the fact that my computer came made with the cheapest possible parts possible except for the processor....an AMD.
Many operating systems are designed fairly poorly. Everyone knows the whole microsoft is evil and sucks adage, but you gotta admit they are getting a little better. And some of their products rock! (i.e., xbox) Never thought I'd say that...
The biggest problem is stupid people. They usually fall into 3 categories: technophobes, who are just plain too afraid to do anything, and usually refuse to learn; extremely stupid people who also don't care to learn and usually screw things up bad; and the ignorant masses. The computing revolution came on so quickly that our schools haven't yet had time to catch up! And, although most schools these days do offer often mandatory computer introductory classes, well.. most adults just aren't in school anymore!
I think that there will always be technophobes, and always be people who just don't want to know how to properly run a computer. Just like people who don't know how to change their oil or flat tire in a car. But the vast majority of people will eventually, probably within the next decade, learn how to at least navigate around basic computer operations and internet surfing. Just like how people figured out how to drive.
This question needs room for more than one answer. Software programmers create what the end user uses and if created poorly, then the end user more often than not aggravate a problem that originated by lack of clarity, poor protection/restriction on input, and other user integrated interactions. I'm trained enough about PCs to be smart but not current and it leads to being dangerous to my system because of the questions I can think up that newer PC users don't. Problems are as much a fault of the unknowing user as they are the inexperienced or poorly performing programmer(or Software). TLC
everything can be prevented, i for one have had a computer for 8 years and had no viruses. If you are willing to try, all viruses can be prevented!
