Megapixels- Overkill

by vroger - 11/25/05 5:43 AM In reply to: How many megapixels does your digital camera have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Put simply, I have 6 digicams- 2 Canon (G3 and D300-DSLR), 2 Lumix(FZ20, FZ30), 1Leica (Digi1) and one Pentax Optio S4i(which is always on my belt). The most Mega pixels in any one digicam is 8. More MP's are illusory. On my wall is a tack sharp poster size image made with a Lumix FZ20, which sports 5 megapixels. It could have been much larger.I could have had the same results with 4 megapixels. I purchased the FZ30, because it is more ergonomic and user friendly than the FZ20, but I use both. When I want to shoot available light I use a 6 MP Canon Rebel 300 DSLR. Fabulous results- My 4 MP Canon G3, which I also use for available light is also teriffic, although its shutter lag used to make me grind my teeth. In sum therefore, I threw myself into the digital game after years of collecting and using film cameras. I would never leave digital and feel that after all this use, I can state with some small authority, if you cannot get spectacular results from a name brand digicam with 4 megapixels, the fault is with you, dear reader- not with the machine. I have 3 digital cameras.
Oldest: DC-280, 2 MPixels) with the most accurate colors (on my equipment, incl. Epson SP700 printer) I have seen to date. Excellent results up to 8x10 prints. About 6 years old.
Newest: Two cameras, Toshiba PDR5300 (5 MPixels) used for quick snapshots has good low-light results, but is a very slow camera. When I bought it, it gave me what I need for real estate photographs (low-entry cost, pocketable, low-light operation, good color, good contrast). Problem areas are: battery loses power quickly.
The other newest one is Nikon D100, 6 MPixels. Wish this one was 'pocketable' :-) Coupled with Epson SP2200, makes for fantastic proofs for house feature sheets and advertising copy.

Kodak P850

by jparkhill - 11/25/05 6:00 AM In reply to: How many megapixels does your digital camera have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I've only had this camera for 3 days and played with it even less. The Kodak P850 was a fifth camera for me, so I wanted to budget (under $400) - but, that didn't include losing any features. The camera has 12X zoom for starters and many features my other cameras don't offer in the PASM department.

So far, I'm really looking forward to a nice camera that emulates 38mm to 438mm zoom features. In some shots yesterday, the sharpness up close (macro) and at 12X were very acceptable.

4 megapixels are all I need!

by psiddle - 11/25/05 6:13 AM In reply to: How many megapixels does your digital camera have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The best camera in the world is the one you take with you!

I favor small size over camera flexibility and thus opted for the Canon Powershot S410. Bought it on-line from Costco and received an extra battery, camera bag and camera case for a price less than the camera alone at local retail stores.

My Nikon D100, 6

by kayo38 - 11/25/05 6:19 AM In reply to: How many megapixels does your digital camera have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

To get it, I sold my Nikon Coolpix 950 and 995 and traded in my Nikon F4 body. I love it, glad to have it and will probably trade it in for the D200 which is coming out soon. I print a lot in addition to web design so I need the flexibility and the D100 allows me to use all the lenses I had for the F4. The Coolpix 950 was a nice little camera, the 995 was great and if they had more pixels I probably would still have them.

7.1 megapixel digital camera

by djssoc - 11/25/05 6:24 AM In reply to: How many megapixels does your digital camera have? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I have Canon Power Shot SD500 that would be perfect if it had a red eye remover before taking a picture.

I have a Canon PowerShot SD500 that has 7.1 megapixels.
It's a great camera. The software let you stich together 3 or more pictures to make a panoramic view.
Very easy to use.

Olympus C-730UZ. Its max is 3.2 megapixels and I don't shoot at the highest setting. I get 160-180 shots on a 128 MB XD card. I've printed and had 8x10's made of photos and they look just as good as film.
