You thought DRM was bad? PS3 nightmare.

by LiK - 11/18/05 8:55 AM

not sure if anyone knows about this. i found this news from a site called firstadopter. it seems sony will try to make the PS3 another victim of their insane DRM invasion.

"Sony is really racking up the goodwill points lately. A new patent has been filed that registers Playstation 3 software to only one machine. Which means you can't sell or loan a game you bought for your PS3 once you register it. Ouch. Xbox 360 is looking more and more palatable now, even if it's from the evil empire. Sony is trying to be worse. Gasp.

By means of the present invention as described above, the following effects are obtained. Since only titles for which legitimate software has actually been purchased and which have been initially registered in the machine table can be used, resale (so-called used software purchase) after purchase by an end-user becomes practically impossible."

this means that you can only use that game you bought for that one system! say goodbye to used PS3 games and taking your games to your friends' house to play...

Not so fast

I found a GameSpot article (http://www.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=23921409) referencing a guardian blog (http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2005/11/15/sonys_clampdown_on_secondhand_games_updated.html) which quotes a Sony PR Manager saying:

"I would like to clarify that this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console."

When do you know Sony is lieing?

Sony has issued many statements. Today, I don't believe any of their responses.

-> They said there was no Mac version of the DRM software, but there it was.

register vs lock

the new nintendo ds wifi games (such as mario kart) also 'link' the game and the machine, but mainly to store and track highscore and profiles

so, even if you "mathced" up your ps3 odds are it would still be playable but possibly without certain community type offerings (SPECULATION)

resale is one thing - it would totaly kill rental offerings, and with prices probably taking a new jump, that seems like a seriously unwise step
