Hard Drive Enclosure Reccomendations

by waterboy100 - 10/31/05 10:44 AM

What is a good hard drive enclosure to buy brandname-wise? I will be using it (temporarily with a 300GB seagate and then with a 80GB Westerd Digital drive). Are enclosures made to work with one brand better than another? what are the better companies? am i even posting this in the right section? please respond.

Depends...

Some external cases may not handle 300gb. Their controllers weren't built for it. The issue isn't necessarily brand but whether or not it can handle the high capacity drive. Just make sure it has a fan. I use Ultra's and they can handle 300.

Depennds...

I recently purchased a CompUSA enclosure and put in a 3.5" drive. Only problem so far is heat build up. These cases do not breathe or vent so I am going to drill holes in it. (after I remove the drive). Or maybe leave half of the case off. Before buying just bring any related specs with you and verify what you need.

Pretty nice one

I have one made by ADS technologies, called a Dual-Link drive kit (model number DLX185). It's a 5.25 inch kit that will support either CD drives or 3.5" hard drives, and can support either USB2 or FireWire 400 (comes with 2 firewire ports). They purportedly support any drive size you put in there, so hopefully it would work for you. :-) I put a 160 GB IDE hard drive in there, works like a dream with my iBook. Cost me 55 dollars, and it has a nifty fan in back to help keep the drive cool.

High Capacity Ext Enclosures

by VAPCMD - 11/11/05 8:33 PM In reply to: Hard Drive Enclosure Reccomendations by waterboy100

There are literally hundreds of external HDD enclosures of all sizes, shapes, colors and features. One that works with hard drives up to 1000GBs is the Adaptec ACS-100...USB 2.0.

Good Luck on your choice..

Mobile Disk

by ronams - 11/22/05 5:12 PM In reply to: Hard Drive Enclosure Reccomendations by waterboy100

Mine is from Mobile Disk. I bought it at Compusa. It's incredibly simple to put together. I made sure it had both firewire and USB connections. It is also important to check what size connectors to get since there are some options. I notice mine has a light buzz sometimes, but it works fine. It is very compact and I travel with it regularly.
Good luck

HD Enclosure -- Look for internal power supply

by anonymuse - 12/12/05 2:44 PM In reply to: Hard Drive Enclosure Reccomendations by waterboy100

If I could do it over again, I would look for 2 things. 1) Internal fan, 2) Internal power supply. Some of the power supplies are very bulky, and there are some models out there with internal power supplies if you look hard.
