It's network attached, and supports 2 IDE hard drives so there's room to expand once you add one drive to it. I have a 200gig Maxtor that was $80 on sale at Staples, and am planning on adding another drive later on. Probably between 300 and 500 gig once prices come down a little more. I like it because I can install the netgear software on any windows machine on my nextwork to access it. It doesn't require 1 specific machine to be running 24-7.
There were some issues with it when it first came out, but the new firmware seems to have fixed those. It seems Netgear pays attention to what people ask for in the user forum.

Then your own built external drive is probably half the price of a proper external harddrive.

If you need to go external, my preference is to buy selected separates. Get a good quality external enclosure such as the Adaptec ACS-100 and a separate hard drive to put into it. I like the Adaptec ACS-100 because it works with any PATA hard disk drive up to 1,000GBs and is widely compatible with USB ports. With that enclosure you can pick the largest HDD your $$ will buy... here's a 250GB Maxtor HDD with a 5 year warranty you can get at NewEggg.com for $101.00 +3.99 shipping. IF you shop carefully ...you should be able to get the ACS-100 for $40.00-45.00. Total is about $150.00 for one of the best enclosures (1 year warranty)and a 250GB HDD (with a 5-year warranty) for $150.00. Most of the external HDDs by Western Digital, Seagate, etc. have only 1 year warranty...drive and enclosure. Same with some of the internal drives on sale with big rebates...many are one year warranty.

You may want to consider making your very own new discussion next time.
In short for Windows you plug in the drive and a new disk drive letter is added. You can copy files there and use those or copy off files you don't use often but want handy.
Be sure you don't think of these as storage since they can fail so maintain the backups of what you can't lose here and off your laptop.
