External VS Internal in enclosure

by timc18 - 11/16/05 8:40 AM

Hi, I'm thinking of buying an extra hard drive for myself, but I'm troubled by all the choices out there. Will there be any differences if I buy an enclosure and internal hard drive versus just buying an external hard drive?

Thanks!

external vs. internal

They are pretty much the same. You just don't have to put one together. If you do decide to put one together make sure the enclosure has a fan. Ultra puts out a pretty good one. Good Luck.

and life goes on...

Enclosures

I personally like the enclosure idea because you can swap out later. cost wise it depends on how high end your enclosure is but I believe it is cheaper to build than it is to buy a ready made external. Andy

Suggestions for external drive vs enclosure

by remilk - 11/18/05 4:33 AM In reply to: suggestions? by timc18

The following is based on the prices on the CompUSA website (www.compusa.com) at 7:00 am 11/18/05. The prices reflect discount and/or rebates.

External 250 GB harddrive USB 2.0: $179.00
External 250 GB harddrive firewire: $129.00

Internal 300gb harddrive: $129.99
Enclosure USB2.0 & Firewire: 34.99

I notice that the "on sale" prices for the external harddrive seem to beat the internal/enclosure combination. This is welcome change over 2 years ago.

Whwn the mothrboard for my old laptop died I purchased a USB hard drive enclosure. This enclosure works great for me and gives me 40GB of additional and portable storage.

You may need to check stores in your location or some online sites to make a final decision.

I hope this is helpful.

I'm adding my third self-built one...

I get the internal harddrives and enclosures from newegg.com. They have 250G harddrives for under $100 and the Venus DS3 USB enclosure with a fan and an off/on switch for about $30. Very, very easy to put the harddrive into the enclosure and tighten the 4 little screws.

I use these as storage because I do a lot of video work with large files and they are so easy to go from one computer to another, not to mention you can always keep a complete backup of your main harddrive, without having to go through an archive procedure.

Cheap enclosures

by rbrodner - 11/18/05 5:50 AM In reply to: Suggestions for external drive vs enclosure by remilk

You can get USB2.0 enclosures for a lot less than $35. Check out TigerDirect.com. I was buying a bunch of stuff there already and decided to check out enclosures for the two hard drives that I had recently pulled out of my PC and laptop for upgrades. They had a 2.5" enclosure for $10 and a 3.5" one for $15. Now instead of collecting dust, the two drives can easily be used for saving our irreplaceable photos and home movies.

Conclusion: if there is more than $15 difference between the internal and external drive, buy the internal and an enclosure. Or if you have old drives lying around, for $15 you can make a cheap and easy backup drive.

Are there any BOOTABLE external

by mvans10 - 11/18/05 9:03 AM In reply to: Cheap enclosures by rbrodner

Is it possible to have a bootable external USB hard drive?

Bootable drive?

by obroad - 11/18/05 11:28 AM In reply to: Are there any BOOTABLE external by mvans10

Reading the description on CPC's website the Newlink USB housing can be bootable but the wording is unclear.

See http://cpc.farnell.com/ and look up item CS11727

Yes

by Brianstech - 11/18/05 2:01 PM In reply to: Are there any BOOTABLE external by mvans10

As long as your BIOS and drive (or enclosure) supports it. You can search your BIOS for "Boot to USB Device" or something along those lines.

External hard drive bootable

by Cangaseira - 9/30/09 6:50 PM In reply to: Are there any BOOTABLE external by mvans10

Yes,the external USB hard drives and USB flash drives can be bootable.
Computer interfacing via Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports has become such an indispensable connection method that it’s hard to believe that USB has only been in use for short period of time.
However there are some limitations as for example speed. Some older BIOS would not recognize USB drives in the boot preference sector setting etc.I am using myself a external small bootable HD to carry my work from home to my office.it is very handy and fits into small
space in my bag.
I have seen an interesting article at
http://hard-drive-external-reviews.thenerdfiles.com/bootable.html
I believe it could be a practical solution specially for traveling.

Not there.

by Brianstech - 11/18/05 10:00 AM In reply to: Cheap enclosures by rbrodner

Sorry, but I can almost guarantee those cheap prices are after a rebate. A rebate you'll probably never recieve.

I looked at Tiger Direct recently to see if anything has changed. They still list items at a good price with a red asterisk, making you click the item, then click it again to finally find the REAL price before rebate. That's what you'll more than likely pay, unless they do give in after 9 months of your threats.

They are now touting some sort of "Rebate Guarantee" that sounds good, until I looked at some online ripoff reports to find many recent ones involving TD.

I don't hate them. I honestly wish their guarantee works. I just don't trust their tactics, and quit buying from them over 2 years ago because of it.

Sorry to get so far off-subject, I just keep seeing recommendations for Tiger Direct on these forums.

Stick with Newegg, Chief Value, (a spinoff of Newegg) and Zip Zoom Fly. Good prices without deception.

Ditto

Here's a strong 'Amen' to the recommendations for NewEgg and ZipZoomFly. This is the first I've heard about the Newegg spinoff - I'll have to check that out. As for Tiger Direct, they screwed me out of $100 about ten years ago, and I swore I would never buy anything from them again. I have spent thousands on computer stuff since then, and it gives me great pleasure to say that TD has not seen a penny of it.

Rebates are ok

by dtae - 12/25/05 9:34 PM In reply to: Not there. by Brianstech

I know they are a pain in the ass, but I have done a lot of rebates over the years and several from tiger. I get my money from them.

Happy with INOi firewire enclosure

by paanmc - 11/22/05 12:39 PM In reply to: Suggestions for external drive vs enclosure by remilk

I recently snagged a 250Gb Seagate on Tigerdirect (after rebates) for $69 and combined it with a INOi enclosure for another $39 (my wife's laptop has firewire but only USB 1.1 so I need a firewire capable enclosure, which seem to run $10 or so more than just USB 2.0). It has a solid aluminum case and no noisy fan. It's been a few weeks now and I'm very happy with the combo. At $110 that's a much cheaper 250Gb external drive than buying it.

I also tried the Netgear SC101, which I still think is a good idea, but it didn't work for our situation, although it might have been me. I've posted my experience on that elsewhere in the forum. Might want to look into it. The big advantage is, if you have a wireless lap setup (no network or power cords), you don't have to resort to a wire just for the external drive. Since my wife usually uses her power cord these days, it kind of made that arguement less important for us.

Hope it helps!
