XP System Restore

by Rezadoo - 11/15/05 9:56 AM

My USB ports were not being recognized and I decided to run the System Restore to reset my computer back to the original factory settings. Before I did that I proceeded to back up my hard drive onto DVD using the DVD recording program that came with my computer (Nero). Once that was completed, I performed the system restore function and it worked fine and restored my settings and am now able to use my USB ports. However, I could not run the executable that was created by my DVD burner program to allow me to restore my back up folders into their rightful place. What I then did (stupidly or not) was to try and copy the folders off my DVD back into the hard drive. Well the end result was a mess. My folders are all scrambled up and I have duplicate folders (such as the My Documents folder) sitting in different places on my hard drive. I would like to try and clean this up as best as I can, but I am afraid of deleting registry keys and/or .dll files that will mess up my computer all over again. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Did you reinstall Nero?

What kind of backup did you do?

If you simply made copies of the folders onto a DVD, you should be able to drag them or copy and paste them using Windows Explorer into the right location.

XP System Restore

You may have to reformat and reinstall everything. If you backed up Windows and then put it back in your Windows folder again you will have problems. A reinstall of Nero would of been better. Sometimes even a back-up on DVD does not work because objects may be missing. If it's not too much trouble I would reinstall and just use System Restore and get Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost will make a copy of your harddrive and it will let you install without the problems of copying programs from a DVD.
Good luck.
