Put a movie on your hard drive and watch the gigabits disappear
Didn't think of software - after that its video, closely followed by video.
It seems in my case, I have an equal amount of things cluttering up my pc. However, I try to use as little space as possible in order to preserve it for backups, recovery apps etc...On my 80 gig, I use about 29%. I do a lot of backup instead to dvd or other sources, this keeps my HD running a bit better. In my experience, the more cluttered the HD the slower it is, for obvious reasons. My defrag doesn't take as long either along with virus scanning etc...But when i want to store large amounts of whatever, i have the room. This system works for me.
I PRESERVE AT LEAST 40 GIG FOR WINDOWS UPDATES LOL...

60% of my hardrive is just computer games
my computer is slow, and it's all due to music. If I played my entire iTunes library 24 hours a day, it would take a week to get through. It's out of control, but I'm hooked. I'm sure I'm not alone.
I'm planning on getting another computer, and keeping the old one just for music and photo storage
That's what I did. It doesn't have to be a 250 Gigs like mine but an 80 Gigs HD should do if you are using AAC for your files. That way your computer will speed up.
sad, but I never even considered that. If I decide not to go the new computer route, I'll do just that. i may do that anyway. Thanks
Even if you decide to go with a new computer, an External HD will help too. I have only programs and files currently in use in my main drive. Everything else goes to the external one. That serves two purposes: Keep my main drive uncluttered and my way of backing up files.
I just bought an extra drive. I was wondering why my computer only has 20GB out of 80GB. I put all my video onto hardrive, but I still dont know why I dont have much space. I read its probably my music, but in itunes it says that I am only using 1.5GB at the bottom. Is that accurate? If I was to put all my music onto external drive, would I delete all music from my computer and install itunes on external hard drive?
Thanks
Andrew
by the way, I have a Sony VAIO if that matters.
-> I'd run TreeSize to find out where the space has gone.
2.) iTunes reports the size of the music in your library...there may be other music files on your hard drive that are not included in that total.
3.) No need to uninstall/reinstall iTunes...it doesn't make any difference which drive you install it to as it can play music files stored on any drive.

I have a 70 GB hard drive, and almost 20 gigs of that are videos, mainly episodes of TV that I watch.
music files are huge...especially if you make them 320kbps.
Yeah, I do alot of video editing. I have 530GB of storage consisting of one internal 80GB Drive, one external 200GB drive and one 250GB drive (All Western Digital by the way) and the two external ones are all filled up with video. I need a new external drive if I want to get past another season hehe. So yeah, I guess that's 450GB of raw .avi video.
Music, 70 Gig's
