I wanted to buy an iPod mini, especially because a friend of mine said that they were new and improved from the one she has. But from looking at the CNET info, I can't tell if they are actually "new products". Are these iPods new? If so, why aren't they being advertised by the "big box stores"? This is going to be a gift so I don't feel OK about getting a new-in-box or refurbished item.
Any help? or recommendations?

Check out Apple's website, you can get a refurbished mini for $159 or $199 on the "outlet" section of their website. They are not sold new by the bix box retailers however, the ipod nano replaced the mini.
there are still lots of them out there since the Nano took it's place in the lineup
