Here's what I have heard

Dell-Pretty good computers, fairly decent service. Limited to only Intel products. I like the new AMD products so personally would steer away from Dell just because of that.

Gateway-Gateway has some intrigueing products though I hear there service and reliability are not too good. I have not had personal experience with them except in a desktop and it did have some problems with the hard drive crashing early on and the floppy disk drive not working properly when I first got it. However, I had little trouble with their tech support.

Toshiba-Everything I have heard so far about Toshiba is pretty good. They seem to have good tech support and good quality products. I think they tend to be a little on the expensive side though. No personal experience with this brand.

HP-I have an HP zv6000 laptop and it is a very good system. I like that HP has AMD processors available in some of their systems now giving the user the ability to upgrade to the new Windows Vista when it comes out next year. I am very happy with my laptop. I think overall quality on HP(and their cobrand Compaq) is very good with service being somewhat spotty. I have not had to deal with HP service yet but I have heard some say it is good and others say it is not so good.

Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

Notebook choice

I've had a couple of HP laptops currently a DV1000, it has been great no probs. Aprevious one needed attention when out of warranty and they picked it up from home sorted it New MoBo processor all for a standard charge returned working within a week, I also found their helpline staff very good on Pocket pc enquiries. I also had a Sony earlier on with was a very nice build and design, no need to test the support either. I always think you should try the keyboard and mouse/pad to judge the feel of the build.

say that Apple and IBM come out on top for build quality and tech. support. But, those are both expensive brands. Fujitsu and Sony have very good quality displays. HP, Dell and Toshiba do huge sales because they zero in on the value segment of the market.

When you ask for opinions that's just what you will get, not scientific fact but one person's personal opinion. I happen to like HP and after tons of research decided that the Dv4000 was the best machine for me. Others would differ and promote Dells or Toshibas or Sonys or any of the other builders. Most big builders make better and some not less better lines, in a free market, with very data hungry consumers, very few bad companies stay around.... with the possible exception of Alienware, a company that enjoys an awful reputation but has great packaging (-:

Read the computer review sites on the net. CNET is good. I've pasted in some non-geeky ones below (the first one I've listed is my favorite notebook forum).
