Hey... I'm trying to decide which wireless router to buy, and I had a question about speeds. I've seen basically two speeds, 54 mbps (cheaper) and 108 mbps (more expensive). I'm guessing that the 108 mbps are better and offer faster downloading speeds, but if my ISP is only offering 6 mbps download speeds, would buying a 108 mbps even make a slight difference over buying a 54 mbps? If so, why? Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.
the advantage of a 108 Mbps router if your main interest is Internet downloads. Your limitation there is your Internet connection. If, on the other hand, you were interested in transferring files with computers on a 100 Mbps LAN, then the increased speed might have some benefit.
Even here, however, I would be reluctant to buy one of the so-called super-G, pre-N, or whatever routers at this time. The new 802.11n standard has not yet been finalized. These routers trying to jump the gun with their own versions of the new standard may not be compatible with the final version.
Hope this helps
Frank
Router speed is measured between the PCs in your home network. It has no effect on download speed from the Net. Don't expect the advertised speeds as they are tested in perfect laboratory conditions. The speeds will be fast, but don't hold your breath on getting the advertised speeds.
Thanks very much for the info!
