by spotter - 10/11/05 8:03 AM

Hi.

I'm looking at 5 speakers for surround sound but my brother tells me 2 speakers will do it just as well. Is this true?

2.1 v 5.1

Well it all depends on what YOU want.
2 speakers is stereo!! So if thats all YOU want then your fine.
But if you want the Home Theater surond sound experence, then you will need 5 and a HT reciver. John

Thank you but ...!

Thanks to both of you.

My prob is that Comet have two 2.1 systems (a Sony DAV-x1 and a Kef Kit100) which they claim are every bit as good as the 5.1s.

Given that I have a wife who doesn't share my enthusiasm for boxes and wires, I wanted to know if anyone had any user experience of either 2.1 system?

5.1 best for Home Theater

by TiVolution - 10/13/05 8:39 AM In reply to: Thank you but ...! by spotter

If you going for hometheater, then true 5.1 is better than using 2.1 to simulate surround sound. The best a 2.1 system can do is trick you into thinking you hear surround sound while 5.1 systems really do surround you with the sound. Therefore, in my experieince 2.1 systems sound "fake" when trying to replicate surrouund sound. Even when I tried a "virtual" center channel (which is the easiest to replicate since it doesn't have to trick you directionally like simulated rear speakers do) I haven't liked the sound as much as a true 5.1 system.

Now, from a WAF perspective, the only thing I can tell you to try is to take her to a demo and hope that she hears that difference. My wife did! Also, try to keep the read speakers a reasonable size and let her choose the color.

One final recommendation, don't under spend on the center channel. In many ways, this is the most critical speaker in a 5.1 set up.

More in hope than expectation ...

Thanks for the advice and I'll follow it this weekend but as the heading suggests, I'm not optimistic!

Perhaps I could borrow your wife for a couple of days!

DO IT RITE

by stewart norrie - 10/13/05 3:48 PM In reply to: 2.1 v 5.1 by spotter

5.1 souround is awsome You feel like your in the movie or at the baseball game but to get this awsome effect you need a good amp ande get the best speakers and subwoffer you can afford, example For the last 10 years I have been getting my system together and my mistake was buying speakers from diffetent manufactors and they just didn't sound rite so I just bought a complete set of Atlintac Technology speakers + there Subwoffer and the sound is better than a movie theater and totally involving, Just remember to get the best speakers remember they will last you a lifetime

That's not hard

To get a sound that's better than the theater. That's what I build in my spare time. Poor comparison cause my sound is much better than what you hear at the movie theater. Go to partsexpress.com. That's where you find the best speakers and speaker manufacturers in the world.

My brother - the truth!

by spotter - 10/31/05 6:39 AM In reply to: Tell Your Brother........ by junkinOLtrunk

Well, you've got him down to a t, jot, except you forgot to mention the Betamax and the Sinclair Spectrum!

To be fair to him (he's looking over my shoulder)he pointed me to a review on Cnet, which at least makes the Sony 2.1 system (DAV-x1)seem viable if space is an issue.

I've booked myself into the Sony Centre to try it out this week so I'll let you know how I get on.
