Dell i6000 slowness

by laxer3n7 - 10/23/05 7:49 AM

I bought an i6000 mayb 3 months ago and maybe 3-4 weeks ago it started to move extremely slowly. I had 512mb RAM so I asked a tech friend of mine if I should upgrade the RAM to fix the problem. He said that would probably work so I bought 1GB of DDR2 SODIMM kingston RAM that they said was compatible with my computer. I have scanned the computer for viruses, spyware, and everything else. I have defragged my computer and it still runs slow. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to try and fix it.

Try this.

Get EWIDO from http://www.download.com What did it report?

Get a second opinion virus scan from HOUSECALL at google.com Clean?

Finally, a bug in XP has it degrade DMA but not report it. The easy workaround is to set the DMA to PIO, OK it then set it to DMA and OK it. No reboot is needed and I will not detail this easy procedure any further than this link -> http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

If you do not perform the DMA flip off/on, please tell why.

Tried everything

I tryed switching the DMA, but the ''current transfer mode is still in PIO Only. I also downloaded both of the scans and scanned my computer the ewido scan found 7 things which it fixed, but did not help with the speed of the computer. The other scan found one thing which it fixed but also did not help with the speed. Should I just get somebody to come look at it in person or is there something else that you would recommend.

In PIO mode the machine will indeed be very sluggish.

You found the reason.

Now you have to find why it's stuck in PIO mode. There are not enough clues in your post yet, but at least we know why the machine is slow.

Cheers,

Call Dell

Now its time to call Dell and ask them how to get your system out of PIO mode. Yes, PIO WILL make the system slow. My Inspiron 6000 runs nicely in DMA mode.
