XP "Security Update" hell...

by rogden - 10/15/05 10:55 AM

I allowed Microsoft to search for and install the recommended security updates for my XP Pro systems a few days ago. Since then, I have been repeatedly plagued by a series of messages from Automatic Update. The "first" one says that there is one security download remaining and asks me if I want it (well, "ask" isn't really the right word - it's pretty insistent). When I allow it to proceed, it downloads (or tries to download) the update "816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM)". Then it tells me (after rebooting) that the update "must be loaded over an existing version" of VM. Which, apparently, I don't have. I have tried downloading from the Sun Java site, automatically and manually. The Sun/Java website tells me I already have the latest version. And every time I boot up (and sometimes while I'm working) the d**mned Automatic Updates window keeps popping up to tell me it is either going to download the update (again) or try to install it (again) or reboot my machine in 60 seconds if I don't respond (again) or that it CAN'T update because there's nothing there to update (again)!

My "update history" shows I've already had this update downloaded and run 6 times. I've tried getting Automatic Update to ignore it without success. I've even tried to turn off Automatic Update (it did NOT like that!) I am at my wits' end!

Please HELP!!!

Look for older versions

Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.
Look for more than one version of Sun Java installed on the machine. Many people accumulate them over the years.
Uninstall all but the latest version.
Hope this will help.

Yes, but...

the older versions are Sun Java, not the MS Virtual Machine. After removing all older versions of Sun Java and installing the latest update, MS is still trying and failing to install the MS Virtual Machine update. Obviously we are talking about two different things.

From what I understand

Sun and Microsoft went through soem turmoil some time ago which is why some versions of Windows XP do not have a Java virtual Machine installed. The reasoning behind the problems between these two companies were because Sun let Microsoft use it's virtual Machine with restrictions. Microsoft broke those restrictions and changed the coding for their version of the Java virtual Machine. Microsoft Virtual Machine does not equal Java by Sun and no matter how many times you download the latest version of Java by Sun you won't get rid of this update.

Here is a link to the Microsoft site dealing with their Java Virtual Machine:

True but no solution

I'm familiar with the Sun/Microsoft dispute that lead to the discontinuance of the "Virtual Machine". That only adds to my confusion. This machine is relatively new, and to the best of my knowledge has NEVER had VM. I don't know why Windows Update thinks it needs to try, but that does not keep it from repeatedly trying (and failing) to update it. What I want is to stop these repeated vutile attempts that keep interrupting my normal processes.

Microsoft VM

If you don;t have MS VM why don't you install it, and then you won't be bothered by the update?

How?

OK, I'll bite. From where?

Microsoft doesn't offer it because of the licensing problems. Sun doesn't offer it. I've done a search of websites and I haven't found it.

Just Google

Search for "Java Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_04"
You'll get multiple listings to choose from. There is a version 1.5, but I had problems with it and went back to the previous version. Hope this helps. chuck

Wrong issue?

by rogden - 10/18/05 3:24 PM In reply to: Just Google by chuckieu

I already HAVE the Sun/Java Runtime Environment. It has been on my computer the whole time, since all this mess started.

The problem (apparently) has nothing to do with the current versions of Java Runtime. The problem is that Microsoft Update is mistakenly identifying Virtual Machine on my computer and trying to send me an update, when in fact it has NEVER been there. I even went back to the system disk Dell supplied with the machine - there's no VM on it to reinstall.

I repeat, no sign there was EVER VM on this computer. But Microsoft keeps trying to "update" this nonexistant program, and THAT is what is causing me the headache.

Posted below about Java, but forgot to mention-
There is an alert about the update causing catastrophic
failure for some. This is the reason many of us turn off the automatic update and do it manually so we can check out the update or hot-patch before installing after downloading. chuck

Thanks. The site just confirmed what I already believed - there is NO VM on my computer.

Now the question is whether I want to get myself involved with installing a piece of unknown software which, even if it is the authentic VM, is no longer being supported by either Sun or Microsoft. If I start having problems with it, there seems to be very little officially I can do about it.
