MS AntiSpyware + Ad-Aware + Spybot

by mjitkop - 2/4/05 6:40 AM In reply to: Has anyone tried. . . by Coryphaeus

I installed it the first day it was available. I wanted to compare it to Ad-Aware and Spybot so before I first ran MSAS, I ran Ad-Aware then Spybot that both reported that my system was clean. By the way, I use both Ad-Aware and Spybot because sometimes one finds something that the other doesn't and vice versa. So finally I ran Microsoft AntiSpyware for the first time and it found a few entries that I carefully analyzed. Some of the entries were related to Kazaa and other stuff that I had uninstalled a LONG time ago. The entries it found made sense so I was pleasantly surprised. I also like the fact that everything is automatic and it scans my PC every night by itself. So now I use 3 programs to look for spyware but since MSAS is fully automatic, it's as if I still had only Ad-Aware and Spybot. MSAS also monitors in real-time your PC and blocks spyware before they even get installed on your system in the first place. Neat.

Other than that, like other people here, I use Firefox as my default browser. It's surprising what a difference it makes compared to the old times when I only used Internet Explorer and had spyware everytime I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot. Now, my system is perfectly clean. I also use the free Avast as my antivirus which is fully automatic too and finally I use ZoneAlarm mostly to monitor the outgoing connections to the internet from my PC. I feel pretty safe on-line now.

Best combination of programs

by blindwisdom - 10/14/05 12:12 PM In reply to: MS AntiSpyware + Ad-Aware + Spybot by mjitkop

Yeah, spybot, ad-aware and MS anti-spyware are the same three programs I use. They all pick up different things the other two don't, although I especially like the MS anti-spyware interface, how it shows programs and lets you see all the files associated, and rates all programs on their level of danger (although I think they are too lenient with their ratings).

Microsoft beta

by captainmackey - 2/4/05 6:40 AM In reply to: Has anyone tried. . . by Coryphaeus

I have installed it on all five of my machines and have had no trouble at all with it. It is the most comprehensive program of the type that I have found,

MS AntiSpyware

by rick2184 - 2/4/05 7:17 AM In reply to: Has anyone tried. . . by Coryphaeus

I've used Spybot for some time now along with SystemSuite 5's features. This worked quite well for me. Along the way I've tried others like Avast (which I might reinstall), etc.
When I tried MS Spyware I wasn't all that impressed. Unfortunately, since uninstalling it my email inbox is now filled with junk mail. Coincidence? Got me.

The interface and mainmenu seem slick and very professional. Its easy to use and runs quickly. Of course there are no updates for the Beta version, but so far I'm pleased.

It does update. Go to 'File' then 'Check for updates'.

It will also update automatically just go to 'Options' then 'Settings' and you will find it in there.

MS AnitSpyware

by skoshi - 2/4/05 7:51 AM In reply to: Has anyone tried. . . by Coryphaeus

I installed this several weeks ago. It seems to really catch spyware and it runs much faster than Adaware and Pest Patrol which I have also used. I like it.

New MS Spyware

by BeeBear - 2/4/05 9:28 AM In reply to: Has anyone tried. . . by Coryphaeus

Recently my husband installed both Adaware and the new MS Spyware to his home PC, after running Adaware which cleaned many issues, he did the same with the MS Spyware which found many things missed.
He raved so about the findings of the MS Spyware I downloaded it as an addition to my Adaware which I have run for almost a year, I was shocked by the number of files it found.
However it is now deleted from both of our systems. It caused a severe problem in trying to access Explorer, it deleted my AOL AIM, it caused problems with my ACT database. Until MS tweeks it, I have no intention of downloading it again. Stick with Adaware!

SpyBlaster

by Eugene_Gant - 2/4/05 11:20 AM In reply to: New MS Spyware by BeeBear

Don't forget about the free program SpyBlaster that prevents the spyware from getting on your PC in the first place. It is periodically updated (manually) with new 'definitions' similar to anti-virus software and does not have to be running in the background.

MS Spyware : Beware

by gjh13 - 2/4/05 12:02 PM In reply to: New MS Spyware by BeeBear

I totally agree, ms spyware made so many finds of active x, plug-ins, etc.., that explorer just wouldn't operate correctly. Had to uninstall & reconfigure my systems' settings. I would wait although I'm sure most of you like it over spybot or adaware.

This is because you did not read what it found before remove

by golowenow - 2/4/05 1:56 PM In reply to: New MS Spyware by BeeBear

If you just blatently go remove all to everything MS anti-spyware finds then YES it IS going to mess up your system. The first time you run it you must study what it finds very carefully. AOL AIM IS spyware. you must teach it to ignore it. ACT is the same. Don't know about the explorer thing. Never had the problem. Accesses just fine. Could be combination of removing AIM stuff and having AIM trying to run still causing explorer to close ect;.READ the warnings before removing stuff. The program does not "know" what you want on your PC and what you don't. YOU have to tell it.

intelligence?

by MichaelF - 2/4/05 6:47 PM In reply to: This is because you did not read what it found before remove by golowenow

Hello

I would counter with the fact that ms antispyware then is not intelligent enough. Out of all the years that I have used adaware or spybot I have not had a problem with deleting everything they found. Most users do not know which processes are safe or not and that is why you get a program to do it. It is easy to be thorough if you just pick up everything regardless of how dangerous it is.
