After trying several utilities (including Norton) I have found that Diskeeper is by far the best.

Do not fool with either, trash them for DISKEEPER. It is the greatest. There is no comparing. You will be amazed with the results.

DISKEEPER IS TOPS

by Ron Geiken - 10/14/05 4:00 PM In reply to: DISKEEPER IS TOPS by Rowdy Yates

I have used diskeeper for years with right now, 3 different computers. In the past, the defragger supplied with the windows operating system was slower than molasses in Janaury. I have been using diskeeper 8.0 for the past year or so, and it worked really good, but just recently downloaded diskeeper 9.0. That also is an excellent product, and I will do the upgrade for about $20. It is really fast, and with the later versions of diskeeper, have never had a problem. You can run them in screensaver mode, and keep you disk with minimum fragmentation. If you can't upgrade, the new version is about $50, but it is still worth it. It is a lot more enjoyable to work with a computer that has minimum fragmentation. Probably a lot of things other than the windows supplied version will be OK. Remember, most of the things that microsoft provides with Windows XP is only a stripped down version of a better product.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

I use Nortons for anti-virus and defragging. For me, it's a matter of trust. I've used Nortons for many years and they have never let me down. As a matter of fact, I believe and thank Nortons for helping me defeat viruses and repair problems on my computers dating back well before windows came into being. I have always used their System Works, ever since they came out with it. I especially like their Windoctor. I don't believe their is any other program that can check active X as well as nortons. I use windoctor in combination with Registry Mechanic (another great program) to keep my windows registry free of errors.

fragile eggs

by buckassociates - 10/14/05 12:44 PM In reply to: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. by acklark

if you are using norton and registry mechanic together, you are tying up a plethora of resources, and are probably experiencing some extremely long boot times, as each competes for resources to load. I'm not knocking either product, but wonder if maybe running them both is overkill, as each of these are very hungry critters when it comes to using system resources.

None... they are way too slow

by STenorio - 10/14/05 10:33 AM In reply to: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk? by dromel

Use diskeeper, it is super fast, efficient and it won't hog your processor while defragging. You can schedule when to do it even if working at the time and you won't even notice.

I dumped Norton's and always hated window's. They are too slow and offer no advantage at all.

It is the best defragger out there.

Choice of defrag program

by terryfowler - 10/14/05 10:48 AM In reply to: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk? by dromel

Try Executive Software Diskeeper, it really whizzes along and will defrag in the background while you are in 'Screensaver' mode, will also defrag two disks simultaneousely. Windows defrag is a 'crippled' version of this software

disckeeper

by buckassociates - 10/14/05 12:57 PM In reply to: Choice of defrag program by terryfowler

so, i have read these threads, and it seems like diskeeper and perfect disc are the best choices, so which of these would get the most votes for a third-party defragger?
i tried roxio registry mechanic, back in the win95 days, and it ate so much of the machines resources (back then), that it literally killed it within two weeks, so, i know, from experience, that it will probably want more of my machine than i willing to give it, and, as, previously stated about norton, once there, you cannot make it leave, regardless of what you try to do, it seems worse than some spyware, as far as coming back and creating even more headaches.
unfortunately, HP felt it necessary to include norton on my wife's new machine, and am going through the eradication struggle all over again. everytime i think i'm done with it, SURPRISE!, three weeks later i get another nag from them!!!

Diskeeper 9 is much improved.

by gts - 10/14/05 1:50 PM In reply to: Choice of defrag program by terryfowler

Just upgraded to Diskeeper V9 an it's much improved. They seem pretty good at incorporating some of my feedback that I had given to them about their product in the past. Like having a way to stop it from the tray when it starts up. Or to not start it up if there is heavy disk IO going on. Plus I complained that in the past that while it was running that it hogged up to much resources and windows became unresponsive. Appears to be much better so far.

use neither as VoptXP is fastest in world

by goofytechie - 10/14/05 10:52 AM In reply to: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk? by dromel

for absolute speed VoptXP is definitely fastest defragmenter using XP & 98SE etc
but Perfect disk has Offline Defragmenting for XP
Directories & Pagefile etc, which others do not have
Plus it sets up files for faster bootups
so its use VoptXP speedy but at least once a month use
Pefect Disk for best defragmenter available

Defrag

by Chas666 - 10/14/05 12:50 PM In reply to: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk? by dromel

I agree with jabarnut. I.ve used windows, Diskeeper, & Norton, all too slow. Perfect Disk if fast and accurate; you usually always end up with a "perfect disk", i.e., zero fragmented files.

Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk

by WEAVERRJ - 10/14/05 1:48 PM In reply to: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk? by dromel

Both are slow. The good thing about Norton is it is it's options (1)to place your pagefile at the head of the drive, and (2)consolidate all your folders in the front. I use Norton Speed disk only when I want to do both things. I avoid Win Defrag like poison.

For normal system maintenance I use only Executive Software's Diskeeper Professional 9.0. which keeps all six of my drives defragmented, checking and running whenever the screensaver is running. It also keeps tabs on your swapfile and MFTs sizes, recomends changes and will make the changes for you.

I highly reccomend Diskkeeper!
