Windows XP: Win XP Defrag OR Norton Speed Disk?
I will stick to my Raxco Perfect Disc....

I find that Raxco Perfect Disc does the best job. It has a function called smart placement, and tends to speed up Xp quite abit. If in doubt, time it.
Anyways, you dont really have to defrag windows Xp so often if you ( turkeys ) partition your drives, stoped downloading and installing and uninstalling everything in sight! lol... just kidding! The turkeys know who they are...gobble gobble.. ( a stable and fast system is a system that doesnt have its brains scrambled with every day, therefore is organised ) But, like anything that is Dynamic as a computer is, Defragging is important to reorganise your Drives... keeping all those funny lil bits of info in a logical path for the Fingers to find them when called for...
I dont believe I will ever invest a dime into anything Symantec has acquired, they, like their nasty anti-virus solutions, are way over-rated!

I tried Diskeeper 10 to defragment my sons' computer...
It worked three times, then gave me a "Cannot defragment this disc" type of message, with the suggestion to get rid of files and programs and try again. I did....It still didn't defragment. Then I found Raxco Perfect Disc 7.0. Fantastic product. Faster than anything else I tried. Windows defrag utility (XP home edition) took about 5 hours to perform, and computer was still sluggish. Diskeeper was about an hour or under two hours...until it threw it's hands up and pronounced me "dead- unless you do something drastic". (My own words)
In a nutshell- Raxco Perfect Disc is:
-Fast
-Functional
-Excellent customer satisfaction team- (They truly want your business, and make polite inquiries to be certain you are pleased with your purchase.)
-Thorough defragmenting with the options to even defragment boot files, and "smart fragment" which does a fantastic tune-up of broken files.

I think itīs a whole lot better than Nortonīs ''Speed Disk'' and definitley much, much better than the oem defrag utility from windows. Defrag Programs

I believe that they still supply the simple version to Microsoft.
Their full version has a "set it and forget it" choice and works in the background throughout the entire time the PC is running.

Both utilities do a great job, although I feel Norton Speed Disk does a more effective job defragmenting your hard drive. I have a large number of files on my system, and as of recently started editing and creating my own video dvd's. If you want a highly effective system that I feel is the best defragmenting utility available, try DISKKEEPER from Executive Software. This utility can be scheduled to defrag at pre-set intervals, and while it defragments it does not affect the ability to multitask! It is extremely efficient in moving your files across your hard drive. Visit the site, there is a free download for you to use. If you feel it does the job you want, consider purchasing the full version. I did, and I love it!

Instead of defragging; I restore an image of my system made with Acrosis true Image ( Norton Ghost will do the same) The image was made after a clean install of the operating system and all programs. I just back up the documents that were made subsequent to the clean install onto a cdr or cdrw, usb drive or dvd media and then transfer them back.
This process only takes a few minutes and keeps my system running without any bloat.
No One Has Mentioned Ashampoo Magic Defrag!

I have used both Norton and Diskeeper for years. Both are good. I had set Diskeeper to defrag on a daily basis, and that worked well. Occasionally, the defragging process bogs down dramatically, but I can't blame this on either program. I blame it on the idiosyncracies and fickleness of Windows!
So give Ashampoo Magic Defrag a try. So far I love it!

by buckassociates - 10/14/05 12:37 PM In reply to: (NT) Why defrag at all? by retired teacheryou have an interesting concept, and a very valid point, but, it seems to me, that you would still want the originating program to be defragged. saving the files, as you suggest, is terrific, but, as most of know, mr. gates OS still isn't capable of loading itself without becoming fragmented. Please try loading it on a virgin drive, and you will find that even a simple program, such as notepad, winds up being scattered into several hundred sectors, all over the drive. So, for your personal files, etc., I agree that you have the best solution, but, as the required program becomes more fragmented, over time, the pc's performance is still being degraded, although not nearly as quickly as without your suggestion. so, you still have a VERY good idea that will help.

I have four hard drives on my primary desktop. Each of them are 200 gigs. Two are in Raid.
I defrag daily. It takes roughly 8 minutes to defrag all four massive hard drives.
The only way it could take anyone hours is if:
You used the Windows defragger
Or
You allow your partitions to become so fouled up it does in fact require hours to get them in proper condition.

I recently switched to Diskeeper and prefer it to Speed Disk.
In any case,you can't go wrong with Speed Disk or Diskeeper

Diskeeper runs in the background and can be set to screensaver mode which uses minimal resources. It also lets you do multiple patitions at once, will handle extremely large files and disks and is VERY dependable.
The built-in is based on 5 year old technology and has not been updated for many years.
I've been using it since XP 3.5 - it is the first and best one out there

Since I spent the bucks on Diskeeper I have never looked back and have never had a fragmented drive. The only time I open the application manually is to check that nothing has turned it off.
I use the "Set it and Forget It" option and my drive is now NEVER fragmented.
Not Even Close -- Windows Defrag is Way Too Slow

In addition to much faster speed, Norton lets you place specific files and directories at the beginning or end of the hard drive (desireable to place the swap file at the beginning --- and it's also best to set you swap file at one specific size that is 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your computer) -- making the drive more efficient. Frankly, I don't think it is even a close call. Now ask me how I really feel.
