^^ toshiba satellite heart attack?

by twisted-J - 10/11/05 6:40 PM

hello. at certain times my toshiba satellite A10 has a heart attact. It makes weird noises, that are similar to those that it makes when it checks the hard drive when it starts up - except more constant and high pitched, have to unplugged system to stop, because it freezes.

any help would be helpful thankyou.

Running XP

Then start with no spyware or pests.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 10/12/05 6:56 AM In reply to: re by twisted-J

When I see that I start with a nice dusting and cleaning of the fans and heatsinks. Then I put it through a HIJACKTHIS run and look over the log. If you can't post said log on a HJT forum or read it yourself, try this cocktail of programs. Adaware, EWIDO, Spybot, CWSHREDDER and Housecall from google.com

Cheers,

Bob

PS. Can I ask why so little detail about the laptop? i.e. age, warranty.

Won't start = unlikely to be an OS issue, however...

Having run into more than 1 instance of battery issues that was induced by spyware I don't discount these pests any longer on some issues. But in this case you are not getting to the startup of the OS.

As such consider removing a stick of RAM if you added one and think that it's time has come for replacement or repair. Notebooks are notorious for 3 year lifespans which they don't tell you about.

yes... i just assumed that it was gettin at bit old and was crying out for some fixing, i didnt think it was spyware at all - but i woudnt disregard it after all the suggestions. It was just a sudden occurance, no prewarning or gradual malfunctions.

I will give it all a go and let a pro handle all the technical hardware things.

thanks again, it is very much appriciated.

connect the dots...

>>similar to those that it makes
>>when it checks the hard drive

Well, if the noise appears to be
from the HDD, and sounds similar
to the HDD, then... deduce that it
probably *IS* the HDD. :)

IHDDFWS - (impending hard disk failure warning sound)

It,s more then likely the hard drive.my sony grx690 had the same symptoms you explain above.if no warrenty is present take it to compusa so they may test the drive then go from there.

mr. server sir,

by xv - 10/18/05 10:14 AM In reply to: connect the dots... by server

I have a similar situation with a Toshiba Satellite.

There is a constant "tok" sound after every 10 seconds or so emanating from my hard drive
and I was worried so I haven't been using it since.

I did not know there was such a thing as IHDDFWS - as you put it. What can I do to save my files? My last back-up was 6 months ago and I have some important stuff there I cannot lose.

Would you have any idea if I have enough time to get my files even with this IHDDFWS? What would be the best way to about getting my files? I have a 40GB HDD running on Windows XP.

Hoping you could help me mr server sir.

Thank you in advance.
