HELP PICK ONE

by josegw - 10/8/05 7:20 PM

Ok so this is my situation
I currently have an apple ipod mini. I am coming up on my 1000 song limit. I dont want to take any songs off. I cant decide with an upgrade mp3 player that has about 20 gigs. I've been looking at some, i'm interested in FM tuner, and voice recording, but i want to pay around 200 dollars.I listen to tons of classical music, and i am pretty sure this mp3 player will last me a long time, and i will have many classical songs for years to come. I Can't decide on which to choose..PLEASE HELP!!

here are some that i have looked at but if you know others.. LET ME know

...I dont want another ipod, too delicate

Dell DJ 20
Creative Zen Touch
Creative Zen Nomad Xtra 30 g
Sony Walkman 20g
That's about all i have seen, please let me know of more

Creative, probably

The editors at CNet like the Creative products. Frankly, I find them unattractive - they look like something out of the Jetsons, but with no retro charm - but that's a matter of preference. However, they're good performers, and I think that they have a decent reputation for reliability, as these products go.

The Dell, apparently, suffers from mediocre battery life. I'd just stay away from Sony, period - although I'm sure that there are many who will disagree with me.

I like the better quality models, such as those made by Cowon (iAudio) and iRiver, which list at $300, but you can generally find them for around $250.

Also remember to factor in the cost of an extended warranty, which I feel is very important for an item of this kind, especially if it's hard-drive based. Quality control is a very real problem with these devices.

I'd wait, actually, until after Christmas. The prices on hard-drive based units may come down as these companies begin to market more flash-based models, such as the iPod Nano.

Format also a consideration

Also, one other important consideration - in which format did you transfer your music? If it's in MP4/AAC format, which is iPod's default, it won't play on any of the others (as far as I know), and you'd have to rip them all over again.

My opinion...

Go with one of the Creative players. At least that's my opinion.

Why?

Because Sony's software (which you absolutely MUST use to put music on their players) is pretty buggy, and once you put music onto the player, you can't copy it to another PC.

And the Dell DJ, I suspect, is not sold by most retailers, which means you won't be able to "shop around" to find it on sale. It will not be easy to find accessories either, I imagine.

Creative Labs... their players are very good all-around and quite popular. I have so far not yet heard any complaints about the software as I have with Sony and even with Apple. So I think you get the biggest bang for your buck with Creative Labs.

(NT) probably go with the Zen Touch, Zen Xtra too big and bulky
