Scrubbing Norton Out

by tkmtech - 9/16/05 5:12 PM In reply to: NORTON by austin

NSW2005 was a bear to remove and besides the utils that the Symantec site has, there are some registry entries that are persistant even after using the extra utils. If you dig deeper into the Symantec Knowledge Base they list specific entries in the registry that need to be deleted using regedit.

Systweak recently released some decent RC's; ASO (Advanced System Optimizer) and Boost XP. They don't break the bank either.

tcmtech: where are the NAV 2005 removal tools?

by Marie Boyer - 9/17/05 4:14 AM In reply to: Scrubbing Norton Out by tkmtech

I went to the Symantec site and looked for removal tools for NAV 2005 with Systemworks. I could find removal tools but none specified removal of Systemworks 2005. Can you give me links to those? If you have the time, thanks so much.

SymNRT

by tkmtech - 9/17/05 9:17 AM In reply to: tcmtech: where are the NAV 2005 removal tools? by Marie Boyer

I'm not sure which one of the several "removal" tools you found but SymNRT works for Windows and can be found at the following Symantec Link:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2003091816272106&nsf=nav.nsf&view=es_full&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

Make sure you read the document carefully before running the program. NAV2004 and NAV2005 are lised on the above doc as is NSW.

Make sure you have used Add/Remove Utility found in the Windows Control Panel first. Also SymNRT might produce an error message or might fail but Symantec has 2 links to go to if that happens.

SymNRT takes most of NAV2005 and other Symantec programs out of your PC but there still will be Symantec subdirs around in your system that SymNRT does not remove. Plus a few registry entries linger around as well. You should delete also everything in your Windows Temp subdir.

You might want to run a MS Windows Installation Clean Up Util after SymNRT. Check out Microsoft's Windows CleanUp Utility at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
Needless to say read the document carefully before you run that utility.

Next remove the junk in the Win Temp directory after running Microsoft's CleanUp utility by following the instructions at the Symantec link below:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2003102413414139?Open&src=&docid=2004021313564107&nsf=nsw.nsf&view=es_full&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

You need to delete Symantec subdirs using Windows Explorer. There's a tech note somewhere on the Symantec site that lists these subdirs.

Finally, if you're you're up to using regedit, it's a good idea to pull out the rest of the Symantec crap in your PC. If you're not sure about editing your PC registry, don't .... you'll make things worse if you delete a wrong key value or other mis step.

Run one of the RC's to clean up the registry and you'll have most of the stuff out.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

Mike

Removing SystemWorks

by pdpieklo - 9/23/05 11:41 AM In reply to: registry cleaner by fruzick

You might try getting a "Removal Tool" from Norton (Symantec). I secured such a tool from them to totally remove obsoleted Norton AV Corp v7.51 before installing Symantec AV v10. It worked GREAT!

without a doubt, CCcleaner is the best and easiest to use. It is always improving itself with each upgrade.

What Do You Think Now Marie?

by tkmtech - 10/1/05 12:13 PM In reply to: Best registry cleaner? by Marie Boyer

Hi Marie,

Earlier in this posting you were having difficulty with removal of NSW and I helped pointing you in the right direction to rid your PC of this program (I will never use NSW again). I read this post again and curious to know after all the posts if you decided on a particular RC? Beyond Symantec, there's so many utilities out there (freeware, shareware, trialware, etc)and so many levels of user expertise, opinions and enthusiasm. I posted a comparison link and someone posted another comparison link. There's no clear cut winner out there I could find (before I made an outright new purchase) but lots of energetic users of various RC's.

With so many better utilities out there NSW has to be close to the bottom of the list for most users. I've yet to speak with anyone that likes NSW anymore.

ASO, Registry Mechanic, JV16, CC Cleaner seem to be the most popular, but others do a reasonable job as well. I've recently tried a few different products before doing a routein cleaning and found varing results with various RC's (of course, did not actually perform final cleaning so I could test effectiveness of a particular RC). To my surprize some RC's did not find errors found by others. I'm on the fence about the best one out there and continue to look at the mass number of products out there (of course, I'm doing this either on a trialware, freeware or shareware basis rather than buying everything in sight!)

Interesting point, also, NAV and MacAfee no longer seem to be the best out there for antivirus detection. It's very hard to find a complete suite to satisfy utility, antivirus, firewall and spyware routein tasks.

Have you reached any conclusion for your choice of the best RC?

Regards,
Mike

Mike: I went with CCCleaner.

by Marie Boyer - 10/2/05 2:35 AM In reply to: What Do You Think Now Marie? by tkmtech

It is very user-friendly and highly recommended by everyone, and of course, it is free -- always a good buy! I am not certain if it will ultimately remove NAV Systemworks for me. (My NAV expires in April 2006, and that is when I plan on removing it and installing AVG or Avast.) But I have been using CCCleaner once per month or so to clean old files and uninstalls. Thanks for your help and advice!

Marie,

Yes, it's very popular and highly rated, can't go wrong. Since it's free, makes it a great choice. Hope you're able to remove NSW easily. Good luck.

Mike

Applications

by Maisie663 - 11/13/05 1:58 PM In reply to: Thanks by tkmtech

I wouldn't recommend any of them, I wouldn't want any of those companies running soft ware on my computor and making a guina pig out of it. One little error and you got problems--ben there--done that. Good Luck

Been There

by tkmtech - 11/14/05 7:01 AM In reply to: Applications by Maisie663

While there are some registry cleaners that can create a problem on a PC, the better ones can revert the machine back to the original state with no harm done. It's necessary to clean out the PC registry on a regular basis to keep a system running in peak condition. After time and use, a lot of junk accumlates that slows down a PC considerably. Unless you intend to spend a lot of time tinkering around with the registry (can cause much more problems than a good registry cleaner having safety measures), reading through this forum, there's a lot of good suggestions and excellent products well beyond testing phase. You of course can run any software on your computer you wish to run, you're not being forced to use any software you don't want to use.

I agree there are alot of good cleaners out there but I never found them, Windows XP does supply alot of cleanup for files, disc cleaners, etc, system restore, even zip files, clean history, cookies etc. all programs I ever tried for these never did the job Windows does and I do have a clean computor--I lost an operating system because of these so called cleaners, never again. Thanks and good luck everyone.

slightly off topic

by -Dante99- - 5/23/06 8:31 AM In reply to: What Do You Think Now Marie? by tkmtech

to respond to Mike about Norton not being the best system 'protecter' anymore, I have Zone Alarm's internet security Pro. It's paid for, and I find I never have any problems. It has a triple defence firewall, spyscanner, virus scanner, Internet Messenger (IM) security (MSN, Yahoo, etc), parental controls (never used this part), email protection, ID lock, and you can let the program make suggestions, or lock or open ports by hand in advanced settings.

been using for over 7 years Free for about 3 years now and Paid for almost 4. You get a bit of a deal since you are re-subscribing. I paid 29.26 on my last order and that's in CAN dollars. that pays for one year of updates.

As far as the R/C go, I've used very little. tried JV-16 before, but it was the trial. Never can get a good review out of the trial version. the better companies give less with trial, and the poorer companies give almost what they have to get you hooked (IMHO)

Also, is the reviewers on line getting kick-backs for saying one product is better then another? this always make me wonder about those online reviews. I perfer to read what people like yourselves have to say. I usually can find unbiased comments.
