Had One Built

by Patndianne - 9/30/05 6:47 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I recently had a pc built by PC Club. I ordered an Intel 3.2 processor with hyperthreading, media center, gigabyte motherboard, a gig of memory; the works. I did this because I got tired of all the proprietory crap that the manufactors like HP and Compaq put on their pc's. I have always enjoyed a straight-forward type of machine and now I have what I want without all commercial junk stuffed into my computer. I am absolutley thrilled with it and have enjoyed trouble-free, commercial-free computing since June of this year.

IBM ... I Built Machine

by Wolley - 9/30/05 7:14 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I am a long time computer enthusiast and started working in the computer field professionally RCA and Sperry Rand Univac back in the 60’s & 70’s. In 1976 it became a hobby and did the Motorola ‘MEK” 6800 (Motorola Evaluation Kit) and the Imsai 8080 kit. Those were real kits in that you did the soldering iron and wire-wrap building.

I built PC XTs, PC ATs 386, 486, several Pentium 1 ~ P4 and several AMD systems. My present system is an AMD 2 GHz Athlon system on an ASUS mother Board. It supports DVD-RW, CD-RW, (2) 250 GB hard drives, ATI All-in-Wonder video, firewire, (5) USB 2, Floppy, tape, Iomega drive wired + wireless LAN connection to an in-house network. Is that a run-on sentence? Needless to say I don’t bother putting a cover on it. That would be like trying to work on the car with the hood shut!

I love electronics!

I built the last three computers i've owned.

by dewey56 - 9/30/05 7:16 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I like new challenges. My first was a AMD K6-400 Mhz system, nice for a beginner. My second system(which I still use as a Autocad workstation) is an AMD Athlon 1.8 Ghz (notice a pattern here?). My current system is an AMD AthlonXP 2.5 Ghz processor, 1 Gb of Crucial DDR 400 RAM, a nice, fast video card, a 48x CD burner, which I want to upgrade to a dual layer DVD burner soon, and a 160 GB hard disk. Whatever problems, and most of them have been minor, except for a bad hard disk which failed inside 6 months, I have fixed myself. If I had bought "off the shelf" systems, I probably would have paid double the amount of what I have in the parts.

My over 3 year old Alienware had given me exemplary service. It still runs great. I look forward to a new one when the need arises.

Desktop

by evdon2 - 9/30/05 11:00 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I am the proud owner of an NEC computer which I obtained as replacement for a Compaq computer that had been giving me fits. The computer is about 7 years old and still functioning very well with the smallest incidence of any problems.I think that NEC quit building computers shortly after I obtained mine too bad.

Custom All The Way

by ColoGal2445 - 10/1/05 6:32 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I was skeptical at first getting a custom built computer. But now I would not go any other route. You can upgrade, switch out, do ehat ever you want as long as you have a case that can hold what ever you want your computer to be. No onboard stuff that you can't change if it fails.
I will never buy name brand computers again.

other brands- Falcon-NW

by vtheel - 10/1/05 6:50 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Falcon NorthWest had been awesome. I ordered my computer in 2002, one of their basic "Talon" series. And it has performed perfectly. It has always been able to do cutting edge stuff. I just installed a new GeForce video card (Nvida GeForce 6800) because I wanted an upgrade. Easy to do. Though the installed video card was still running perfectly.

And tech support or assistance I needed, Falcon-NW has been right there, with advice, help, and service. My next computer will be a Falcon-NW.

Brand of computer

by Fiberthree - 10/1/05 8:32 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Mine started as an E Machine Monster 550. But as parts failed and were upgraded, it evolved to be a Frankenputer. But I still have the original keyboard.

Dell, because of two reasons.

by bbeeusa - 10/1/05 12:06 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I could see everything I wanted without leaving my chair and Dell was highly recommended by son and daughter-in-law who both have one.

Apple for those who think different

by dcgeneral - 10/1/05 12:35 PM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Apple! Never a doubt! Trashed my last pc (windoz) in 1997. switched to apple and never looked back!

Lucky me. Cost is more, but you get more. You always get more! But the Mac Minis are dynamite. Small but mighty @ a tiny price. OS X is stable, intuitive and EZ to learn and EZ to love!

No, I am not a salesman for apple.

I only had two problems with it in all this time.
