Does any pc manufacturer have lifetime support?

by Carol77garr - 9/30/05 8:34 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

You know we aren't going to keep a pc for a lifetime so why do companies only give you 90 days for help?

I bought an eMachines pc & will look from now on for
a pc company who offers help for as long as you have the machine. You know a pc is usually only kept for
a couple of years & then we need a new one so why do
companies do this?

I guess some customers really pay them for help.

Any comments?

Lifetime Tech Support

by Riverledge - 9/30/05 3:08 PM In reply to: Does any pc manufacturer have lifetime support? by Carol77garr

When I bought my Gateway in 2003(they now own e-Machine,) I opted for the 3 year parts & labor with lifetime tech support for an extra $119.00. This warranty was probably the best option I got on the computer. I haven't had any major problems at all with the machine, but any problems I encountered have been solved quickly and politely.
Unfortunately, I don't know if option is still available. Check it though.

Apple: It's just better

by hullone - 9/30/05 8:35 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Started as a Wintel guy. Apple users were obnoxious SOB's. Set out to prove anything they could do, I could do. Well...after I shelled out for a used clamshell laptop I saw the light. Everything I want to do, from basic apps to networking is just easier. Yeah it costs more, but my family likes the new me — no more swearing, ranting, raving. Bill Gates is not the antiChrist, and Steve Jobs ain't the second coming, but let's get serious, when you have the combination of proprietary hardware and a proprietary OS you end up with a better experience.

Agreed, but I don't think it costs more...

Many people say that Apple computers cost more, and they have a point if you look at initial purchase cost. But down the road I feel Macs end up costing less. We have a 6-year old iMac ($999 new) that is the primary family computer. It runs the latest OS X and operates as an iTunes and iPhoto server (simply by connecting an 80gb Firewire drive), email and web-searching for my wife and games for the kids.

During that same period my Dad has bought 2 Windows computers to keep current with software, and had to get a third because the second was so infested with spyware and other junk.

Does not Cost More!

Really, when you factor in the system that you get, Apple is not more expensive. Maybe when compared to "budget" PCs offered by the uber-PC manufacturers. But really, my new 17" iMac G5 with the SuperDrive for less than $1500 is THE bargain of the computer industry! The performance, the bundled software, the gorgeous LCD display, the way it performs, simply amazed by what I've got!

No $ Issues Anymore

I would have to disagree with the money part also. With the costs of all laptops dropping, Apple and Windows machines really aren't that much different in price. I have two friends who actually spent more on their Dell and Gateway laptops than what my G4 laptopc cost.

Once Longhorn is released, Apple won't be able to keep them in stock. :-)

Overjoyed Recent Apple Convert

by Gerry77 - 10/1/05 12:09 AM In reply to: Apple: It's just better by hullone

I agree with you. The way the system works is sweet. Upon realizing that it was time to replace my PC and doing the research, I could no longer avoid the fact that Apple was the name of the game for me. Everything just works, my time is spent working on and enjoying my projects. Working on my projects and not half my time on the computer so that I can perform my tasks! Really, up until about 3 months ago when deciding upon going with Apple I was a die-hard PC fan... Now, every day I'm happier that I chose Apple. Better than expected!

I Love GATEWAY

by patty397 - 9/30/05 8:42 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I'm on my 2nd Gateway with XP & an LCD Screen, a 200GB HD and a Pent. 4 Chip! I LOVE it!!
My 1st Gateway is almost 7 years old...Wind 98, Upgraded, still going strong and networked to the xp Machine! It's held up like a champ though some harrowing experiences! Original HD was 6.4 GB's...I upgraded it to 40GB's, added 2 RW Drives and Ram!
I'm firmly SOLD on the quality components!

Dell

by 201340238938028439570886842267 - 9/30/05 9:13 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Admittedly, I bought a Dell for two reasons: I got a decent price on package deal: desktop, monitor, laserjet, speakers, subwoofer, and Dell's a trusted name. That was 5 years ago and while it's treated me well, I'm in the market for a new one. Not sure which brand I'll go with, but I would definitely consider another Dell. Any suggestions out there?

Custom built by a colleague

by HMRothman - 9/30/05 9:24 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

A HS science teacher at my [former] school built this for himself, and sold it at a very reasonable [at that time] price when he upgraded himself. It is my 2nd, though I have been in the IT field for 38 years now.

The LARGE tower is marked "A Open", has a floppy drive, CD 48x drive, 4 unused tower bays, a front reset button [which I have found convenient for those crash-recovery events], 455MHz CPU, 128MB RAM, a 17" NEC MultiSyc XP17 monitor, and lots of cards. But I'VE had it for 6+ years, and it is showing it's age - the monitor flickers or blanks a couple of times a week, the hard-drive is LOUD for the first 3 minutes, and I am working on backing up 6+ years of accumulated work so I can dump Windows ME - it is a pain.

Gateway

by jekane - 9/30/05 9:33 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

My Gateway ''PERFORMANCE 500'' with a 21 inch monitor shipped on 8/11/1999. It has a 500MHz Intel Pentium III and runs Windows XP Pro SP2. It is as purchased except for a memory upgrade. I have been very pleased with the performance until recently. Communicating with camera memory cards and my iPod are slow using the USB 1.1 ports. I plan to upgrade to USB 2.0. Then maybe I'll get another 6 years out of this puppy.

No-name or custom-built PC

by fhorton50 - 9/30/05 10:21 AM In reply to: If you use a desktop, who is the manufacturer? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I built this PC (Soyo Dragon Platinum KT333 mb)three years ago and recently upgraded the memory to 1 GB and changed the processor from a XP1800+ to XP2400+ and a ATI X800 video card; my monitor is a Viewsonic VP912B and have two 80 GB Western Digital hard drives (one boots to XP pro and the other boots to Windows ME)
