Alright, so i've been using my Maxtor External One Touch (250gb) for about 6 months without too much trouble and it's worked relatively right. However, now it refuses to mount on the display. I use a Mac Powerbook G4 and it's showing in the System (hardware overview) as being there with all the available space. Everything seems to be working except for it mounting on screen. Even if it doesn't mount, is there any other way for me to access the information already stored in it? I'm getting no help from Maxtor at ALL, so if someone could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
Dude your so screw'd I've have had not 1 not 2 but 6 Maxtor's fail all with in 8 months after purchase.
Spinrite Wont fix it.
Maxtor's repair utility wont fix it.
You may be able to save your files.
by getting a program called.
"Steller Phoenix" tho I dont know if they make a mac version.
One last thing. There are two diffrent version of the
Maxtor one touch. If you have the first one.
You dead!!!. If you did a OS upgrade on your computer
and after that you could not read that external drive.
you have the old Maxtor case. Theres a defect in the firmware in the on the chip in that case. So on boot up it just low levels your HD. Nice ya. Dont by Maxtor.

if your case looks like this. This is the superbad model
that does the format thing.
Just toss the drive cause it's been formated.
you may be able to get a drive recovery service to do something for you. that will cost ya.
$1200 to $1600 dollers.
