THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT

by FL1P3K - 8/8/05 6:48 PM

I am ready to obtain a PDA. Since I am not an expert I will need help on this area. I want the best PDA out there. Money is no object.

What will the PDA do?

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 8/8/05 7:38 PM In reply to: THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT by FL1P3K

My perfect PDA would be a combination or the Palm Treo 650, Blackberry and the Dell Axim x50v with wifi. But today I still pick up my Palm IIIc when I head out.

Variables!

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 8/8/05 8:25 PM In reply to: THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT by FL1P3K

This truly depends on your preferences and time frame. Currently, the Dell X50v is the best PocketPC (running Windows Mobile), which includes bluetooth, WiFi, SD and CF card slots, 128MB RAM, 128MB ROM, a VGA screen, 624MHz Xscale processor, and an Intel multimedia accelerator (with 16MB video).

At the Palm end, it's the LifeDrive featuring a 4GB built-in hard drive, a 416MHz Xscale processor, Wifi, Bluetooth, 64MB RAM, QVGA screen, and a SD card slot.

However, neither model is perfect (the X50v is faster and better with multimedia, while the LifeDrive has a built-in hard drive). Plus, your choice of OS is usually pretty important. Not to mention your expected use just might factor into the decision, especially if you want a built-in phone, digital camera, etc.

Finally, if you truly want a dream device, and money is no object, just wait a month or two for the next line of PocketPC to become available. They will combine the power of the X50v (and then some) with the internal hard drive of the LifeDrive. I'm drooling already, and they haven't even been announced (officially) yet.

Just provide a little more information about what you want the device for and we'll steer you in the right direction.

Hope this helps,
John

P.S. Like with computers, PDAs become obsolete quickly...a new line of devices is usually announced every 6 months or so. Since a "new standard" for PDAs is about to be set, today's "best" PDA will be obsolete by Thanksgiving, and that line will be considered just average by Easter. Welcome to the ever-changing world of technology! Money may be no object now, but after purchasing the latest and greatest every few months I think your wallet will be singing a different tune! ;)

RE; Variables

I'm surprised there aren't any pda's with integrated har ddrives except for the one you mentioned, the lifedrive.
hmm...since i am more familiar with the Windows operating system i think that i would prefer a pocket pc. So what you're trying to tell me is if i wait for a month or so, a pocket pc with an integrated hard drive will be available?

Maybe you want the FLIPSTART.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 8/9/05 10:06 AM In reply to: RE; Variables by FL1P3K

The Vulcan or FLIPSTART PDA or PC in your hand is something you can research about. While it lacks a cell phone, you could do VOIP.

Flipstart? Vaporware Extraordinaire.

The Flipstart has been scheduled to be released around the holiday season for three years now. I don't think that we will ever see it available for purchase. It's my idea of a perfect portable unit, which is why it will never happen.

Most likely...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 8/9/05 10:26 AM In reply to: RE; Variables by FL1P3K

Windows Mobile 5.0 (shipping soon) is the first to natively support internal hard drives...that's why you haven't seen any current PDAs (running WM 2003SE) with them. However, now that the OS finally supports the technology, companies like Dell and HP can start offering them. While no official announcement has been made about the inclusion of internal hard drives in the next lines, or even future lines existing, they are almost guarenteed to have them, and soon. (Dell normally launches a new line every 6 months or so...it's been 9 months since the X50 debuted. Hp's in a similar situation.)

Unfortunately, since no official announcement has been made, there are no guarantees..so far it's just the thoughts of market analysists and "common sense" that it's coming. As we all know, that doesn't always work...look at Microsoft's next version of Windows (Longhorn/Vista)...delayed for what, two years, and now is going to lack what were known as the four pillars of the new OS? Thus, I'd bet money on an announcement of new PDA lines (from HP, Dell, and others) including hard drives very soon, but I wouldn't stake the bank on it.

Hope this helps,
John

Very likely indeed.

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 8/9/05 10:39 AM In reply to: Most likely... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

After all, any mp3-player > 500 Mb already has it, and you don't notice the weight and size.

The next generation of PDA's should be a mp3-player and a camera (like a cell phone) also and then it certainly needs it. And you should be able to use it as phone, of course.

Windows Mobile 5.0 Not Out Until October 2K5?

by FL1P3K - 8/9/05 9:16 PM In reply to: THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT by FL1P3K

I have heard from an associate that after buying a Dell Axim X5ov(something of the kind), Dell has offered to ship a free Windows Mobile 5.0 installation disc to her on October later this year. If this is true, does this mean companies will less likely to release PDA'S with integrated mobile 5.o before october? What does this all mean? Proffesional help highly appreciated.

try some Sony Clie pOS models

by ackmondual - 9/28/05 1:32 PM In reply to: THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT by FL1P3K

Altho no longer in production, u can be lucky enough to find a new or used one at places like Ebay. A truly feature rich palm OS PDA. wifi, BT, Voice recorder, 2MP digicam, vid cam, HVGA screen, keyboard... all there with some neat Sony software for it. It has the near form factor of a brick, and can go up to $800 USD, more than the MSRP!!

Try checking out the UX50 or TH55 models. There are others, but i can't remember wht they were called.

One day

by ttraylor - 9/30/05 9:41 AM In reply to: THE BEST PDA - MONEY IS NO OBJECT by FL1P3K

Yes one day I want to be able to say - Money is no object

Not today but someday.

Another question is - if you have never owned a PDA, does you first one really need to be the Very Best that there is?
