Let us set the stage.
I am in a Traditional Style Dormatory at a Canadian University. This dorm complex is nice enough to offer free wireless internet to all residents. Unfortunately due to the router (all nortel, unknown model number, a+b output) layout I am unable to stay connected for more than 15 minutes at a time. There are more than 6 walls of concrete between myself and the router I am connecting to, but with XP there is no way of choosing which router I want, so I do not know if I am connecting with the closest router. My true question is this how should I improve my connection between my notebook (preinstalled WIFI 802.11b) and the router? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Netstumbler will find the access points and give you the signal strength.

Windows XP does have a connection tool that shows available SSID names and signal strengths. Rt-click you wireless network connection icon and select ''View Available Wireless Networks.'' (Not very informative, though.)
Ask your school's IT department on what they suggest for a better connection. Maybe they will run somme network cable for you or set up an access point that is much closer and stronger. You paid all that tuition, now let it go to work for you.
See if one of your friends has a wireless-A adapter that you can try (PCI, USB, or PC-Card, doesn't matter). There is agood channce that the wireless-A adapter will solve your dropoff problem. Check to see if the school offers a free or reduced cost adapter.
