I know!

by Alkaline 3 666 - 9/20/05 6:06 PM In reply to: What do you look for when buying a car? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I sell cars... alot of them i see it all people shopping for one reason or another but you can't shop one feature. You have to shop them all and then, and only then can you be happy with your purchase. If somone is looking for something that i can't offer them i will tell them where they can find it! Notable i think that the Koreans will own the automotive industry within 8 years for a multitude of reasons. However for right now Nissans are great cars. Better than hondas! But over all packages is why the Koreans will come out on top because of the whole deal. Price, saftey, fuel economy, looks, service, and warrenty. Never forget about warrenties.

Many factors

by WindeSpirit - 9/26/05 11:56 PM In reply to: I know! by Alkaline 3 666

I've been driving a nissan pathfinder for the past 3 years and I'll have to agree, they are a great vehicle. Preowned "91, manual 5.
There are too many factors that go into buying, work load capasity and hauling, fuel efficent, kids, 9 animals, safety, repair cost & maintence, and of course insurance costs. My life 4x4 is a must, 4 doors w/hatchback and room to fit it all. Although it's not the best to fit my needs, it does it's job very well and I've been really pleased.
Jeep Cherokee's don't impress me at all!

Horsepower

by George B. Lockwood - 9/20/05 6:12 PM In reply to: What do you look for when buying a car? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Driving your car should be enjoyable, and with enough horsepower to get you out of tricky situations, which happen on a regular basis in Florida.

My 2004 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe has 350 horses, and at 72 MPH I am cruising at 1,800 RPM, which amounts to 32-38 MPG.

You can your power and save money too.

Corvette all the way..!

Corvette all the way..! Handling at it's best, horsepower, fuel efficiency and a fantastic resale value. It does not get much better than that.

ITS BECAUSE OF INFERIOR AMERICAN ENGINEERING

by apocolypse2000_99 - 9/20/05 9:24 PM In reply to: Corvette all the way..! by jplalonde

While i do like the corvette i wouldn't buy it for a dollar over a german or italian engineered machine, simply because its american. Oh and Correction, nothing is fuel efficient about a corvette. Though the corvette is not the best vehicle for my comparison.

Lets take the 8 Litre Dodge Viper or the Ford Mustang. The Vipers 8 Litre puts out 505horsepower. The Porsche Carrera GT is a 5.7 litre engine and develops 610horses. The Mustang has a 4.2 litre engine while the cheapest 911 or boxster has less but produces more power. In addition the viper and vette uses rear leaf spring.

The thing is american cars ar cheap, check out the mustang. Crappy suspension (rear wheels do whatever the other is doing), cheap plastic interior, design flaws (the ford gt engine problems oh and ford in general), crappy handling (wheel spin galore !good for burnouts though!) and the list goes on. Over the europeans and even the japanese they could'nt win even with a mile advantage.

So the advantage to americas crappy cars is they are cheap, they have a little grunt and oh that good old american muscle feeling (by the way i love the sound). So the auto companies have to market this cause they can't sell cars any other way. So that is why we hear horsepower, horsepower, horsepower. Who needs it.

I own a hyundai and live in the hills of Jamaica. My hyundai has a 1.8litre engine. I can carry a full load of people in my car with the ac on and the thing goes up the hill with no stress. It only has 120 horses (yes i dyno it). The thing with america is you hardly have steep inclines and when you have them they are smooth. In jamaica i can't you straight up a hill i have to stop because of huge craters in the roads. The point i'm trying to make is that you all don't need all that power. The average driver doesn't need all that power. And even for racing, I remember a two litre turbo toyota startlet making a 9.3 second run in a quarter mile. The engine blew but you get the point.

You dum americans need to realise that your vettes and vipers are causing global warming and making a wealthly prince build the palm islands. Atleast some of yah like Larry David have the sense to buy a Hybrid (Love Larry looking towards the new season)

Bye oh and jamaica isn't a terorist treat

Not all Americans are dumb.

by haywoodwhy - 9/20/05 9:40 PM In reply to: ITS BECAUSE OF INFERIOR AMERICAN ENGINEERING by apocolypse2000_99

I am going to agree with you on the American auto industry, for the most part, but disagree with you on your view of 'all americans'. We are people too, just like you, and many of us feel the same way that you do about auto performance, gas mileage, and pollution. Many of us know that our successes have caused problems for others, in other countries, but we are working on making our USA a country that is not just run by the rich and powerful. Do not believe everything you hear about the USA or its people.Just like any other country, yours included, we have our good and our bad. Sorry that we have been so successful I am not.
Thank you

You may want to check you facts.

by Species8472 - 9/21/05 5:55 PM In reply to: ITS BECAUSE OF INFERIOR AMERICAN ENGINEERING by apocolypse2000_99

The 2006 Corvette gets 28 MPG on the interstate. 18 in the city. And you didnt say one thing about how a Corvette has just about the same performance as a Porshe Carrera, and it costs about $30,000 less.

P.S. the Hybrid costs 21,000 while although it isnt a hybrid, the Chevy Aveo gets just about the same gas milege as a Toyoda Hybrid yet only costs 9,000.

That and people dont buy Corvettes, or Vipers, etc. for the gas milage, they buy them for the performace.

Corvette Z06

by roc312 - 9/21/05 7:12 PM In reply to: You may want to check you facts. by Species8472

The Z06 is recognized by the auto press worldwide as a true competitor to foreign supercars costing 3 to 10 times more. It is also the only 500+ horsepower car on the planet that is not subject to the gas guzzler tax.
From a value perspective, it is an easy winner.

Gas Mileage Still Matters in high performance

by apocolypse2000_99 - 9/22/05 1:48 PM In reply to: You may want to check you facts. by Species8472

Take the Ford GT (which is a hell oh a car, I love it) its gas mileage is worst than an enzo but still the enzo will run laps aroun it. And the example i had in my original article still stands. Take the Viper VS the Porsche Carrera GT. THe Vipers 8L vs the porsche 5.7. Yet still the porsche would run laps around the viper. So in economy cars and performance cars americans still suck.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.............

by rocky1 - 9/24/05 7:17 PM In reply to: Gas Mileage Still Matters in high performance by apocolypse2000_99

Well in my opinion you lost all credibility in your initial post, when you started ranting about the vette and the viper both having rear leaf springs, because the vette has had independent coil rear spring suspension for about 30 - 35 years now if my memory serves me correctly.

And, although the Viper isn't nearly that old, a quick check on Dodge Viper Suspension yielded the same answers there.

Obviously you aren't quite as knowledgeable about these topics as you would like everyone to believe, and as such you probably shouldn't be referring to Americans as dumb.

(NT) Nonsensical arguments

by roc312 - 9/29/05 3:54 PM In reply to: Gas Mileage Still Matters in high performance by apocolypse2000_99

The Ford GT actually gets better gas mileage than the Enzo, and cost less than one quarter of the price.
The Viper costs less than a quarter of the price of a Porche GT and gets comparable mileage.
The ZO6 cost less than the Viper and gets better gas mileage than all three.
Your argument make no sense.

Hell Ya.

by Species8472 - 9/21/05 5:57 PM In reply to: Horsepower by George B. Lockwood

I agree with that all the way. Although my car isnt a new or as beautiful as many, its a big block V8, and its got plenty of power.

I look for handling

by padmapada - 9/20/05 6:12 PM In reply to: What do you look for when buying a car? by Marc Bennett Moderator

By 'handling' I assume you mean how well it drives, in terms of holding the road, braking, cornering, and other features related to driving. Not racing, just enjoyable, safe driving. I drive my car from the city to the country in Maine, often traveling dark, snowy roads in the winter. I want my car to stay on the road, negotiate the ups and downs of country roads, and get back up my ice covered, inclined driveway (I once had a rear wheel drive car that had to be pulled out by AAA). So I go for an all wheel drive Subaru. Obviously, reliability is important, too...we once had a French import (a Peugeot) that tended to break down any time it smelled snow. So I would put handling first, then reliability, then other factors.
If Subaru made a hybrid WRX I would be first in line to buy one.

What about TCO?????

by benoddo - 9/20/05 7:09 PM In reply to: What do you look for when buying a car? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Total cost of ownership. That includes initial cost, depreciation, maintenance, fuel, financing and insurance costs. I need a car to get me from Point A to Point B. I am not delluded by race inspired features that I or any other driver on the road will ever need. Nor do I feel that I need frivolous features such as in dash navigation systems, 2 zone A/C, or 250 hp. All of which are designed to fatten the bottom line while providing any significant value to a car's original purpose.

I'll keep my 4 cyl. 5 speed rice burner getting 40 MPG while the shallow, impulsive drivers of this country can lumber around in gas guzzling SUV's, maxing out credit cards with every fill up. I am happy knowing that my cost per mile is less than half than that of a typical SUV owner.
