combo punishment

by montanamtngoat - 9/18/05 8:21 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I think they should be fined heavy enough to send them to the poor house, a few years in jail, and then a few years worth of community service in conjunction with their parole/probation, and they are to be cut off from the IT world completely and permanently. If caught using a computer they go back for 3-5 times the punishment.Oh, and cut off their fingers so they can't type anymore. For a third offense put them in solitary for life. Or just save the taxpayers money and off them right there on the spot.

Prison for Virus Providers

by whumphrey - 9/19/05 3:28 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

5 years for first offense, with no access to computers, and ten cents for each infected computer. Second offense, double.

Other punishment

by AslanGeorge - 9/20/05 7:46 AM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The best punishment for these people would be a combination of prison and no use of a computer or computer like device for at least a year. Since they enjoy using computers so much they entertain themselves with writing viruses we should take away their rights to use computers. As for those who are involved in credit card stealing - they should go to jail for lengthy terms. And not thos ecushy "white collar crime" prisons that are more country club than jail.

One way to pay them back

by MousePotato - 9/20/05 6:19 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

As I have been hit more than 4 times within the past week and been forced each time to format the drive and start over from scratch, I feel like we should have them all beheaded.

Punishment

by jdd48jr - 9/21/05 2:44 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

They should be fined and sent to jail. They should be financially responsible for the economic damage that they inflict, and jail at least for 10 to 20 years.

If they cause a major distruption to government, or military computers they should be charged with causing great harm to the security of the country and that perhaps looking at some sort of treason, crime against the state should be studied.

Until the punishment fits the crime it will continue to happen.
Take everything they have and put them in jail and throw away the key.

I went with other and here's why

The first five choices are all good for starters but I think a good idea would be to have a forum such as this one where the punishment(s) for the day could be picked from user suggestions. It could then be inflicted on them for the whole day until death or the end of their sentence.

This might also be a good sentence for spammers!

Send to Prison!

by mmeccia - 9/24/05 8:44 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I would like to say give them a day per computer infection, that would be life for first offence. Too much? Then a mandatory min. sentence of 5 years for 1st.(No Early parole)offence! and as stated 10 for #2 20 for #3 Life for #4!!! No Joke.

virus punishment

by howardnv - 9/26/05 10:58 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Some viruses(virii?) are so disruptive to operations and costly to remove, that my opinion is that the creator of a virus be made to pay back every cent in damages caused by his virus to every business and individual affected.

fine, prison or both

by lroger4 - 10/6/05 8:55 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The punishment should be a minimum of a $100,000 fine and 5 years probation for the first offence and just like any other felon they should be denied the use of weapons including computers forever.
I don't buy that the people that do these things are harmless, or innocent pranksters. Nor are they misunderstood exceptionally brilliant prodigies. The people who develop and propagate viruses are malicious thugs. They cost all of us billions of dollars even those who don’t use computers help pay the freight in increased costs passed on to consumers for corporations to protect themselves.

Sent to jail

by rprice2 - 10/8/05 7:57 AM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

For all of the damage that they have done and the cost in both time and repairs (or the purchase of new equiptment), it should be a mim of 2 years.

punishment should be with holding computer access

by rob tomba - 11/14/05 11:19 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I think virus writers are just exposing weaknesses in an operating system/code. They are actually doing a service in that respect. The antibodies/fixes are written to make the operating system/code stronger.I do realize that it is damaging and costs money, but they are just exposing weaknesses that should not be there and since Micro$oft inner workings are not known to the general public, I am thinking that they have the backdoor(s)/vulnerabilities built in so they can control/revoke your licence to use your computer with "their" system. read the EULA. Sony was not smart enough to hide their backdoor/rootkit.
