Lots of Adwares

by alfmic - 9/13/05 10:13 PM

I have Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional in my system,
when I scan for viruses is giving me 12 adwares in the result of scanning, some are low threat and some are high.
What I want to know is 1. From where these all adwares are coming. 2. Everytime I try to delete some of them Norton tell me that is better let us delete them but they are still there.3. How much my system is in danger with all these adwares.
Is there any solution for this matter.
Note
From time to time I run the Ad-Aware SE Personal, but adwares are still there.
Thanks for helping me

If you can tell us the name of the threats

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 9/13/05 10:19 PM In reply to: Lots of Adwares by alfmic

that Norton detected, we can possibly find the caused, impact and possible solution.

Open the activity log of your NAV 2004 then copy and paste here the recent logs (where it says it found adware)
That log has some information on threat name. If you will click on the threat name, your browser should open and send you to Symantec site with instructions on how to remove it permanently.

Try spyware and adware removers

by jackfrostCA - 9/13/05 11:56 PM In reply to: Lots of Adwares by alfmic

Norton 2004 cannot remove all forms of spyware/adware from your computer...however, I use a couple of adware/spyware removers than work quite well.
First, download the Microsoft Antispyware remover at www.microsoft.com/downloads...this one accomplished what Norton could not do, when trying to remove certain forms of adware/spyware. It will also monitor your computer, and catch spyware/adware when it tries to invade your computer. You can also schedule it to auto-run at a specific time, to catch and delete invaders. It will also auto update itself with new adware/spyware definitions from Microsoft, if you have your Windows auto updates turned on.
Secondly, go to www.lavasoft.com and download a program Ad-Aware SE Personal addition. This is a good secondary, or backup program to Microsoft's removal tool. While this one will not auto update, or monitor your system ( you have to pay for that service), you can manually update it with available new defnitions, with the ''check for updates'' link provided each time you open the program
Both programs are not 100 percent perfect, but after trying many of the offered programs, I find that these two are the most consistant to catch most of the junk that circulates on the internet.
If you are into music downloads, stay away from Kazaa...this P2P program is extremely notorious for spyware and adware. I ran a test on this program. I shut off all the security on my secondary computer, downloaded the program, and let it run for 30 minutes. During that short time,my computer had 500 objects, of registry key entries and changes, along with trojans, etc. Most of the items had a high risk rating. It took almost an hour to clean up my computer afterwards. If you want to download music, try Ares, or Kazaa Lite (you have to pay for this one).

Lots of adwares

by alfmic - 9/14/05 1:21 AM In reply to: Try spyware and adware removers by jackfrostCA

Thank you so much for your help Jackfrost. You remind me of ptp software to download music.
I got Warez and I think those all adwares came from there.

warez

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 9/14/05 6:45 AM In reply to: Lots of adwares by alfmic

That should answer now your first question earlier.

"What I want to know is 1. From where these all adwares are coming."

Remove those warez. Empty temporary internet files and recycle bin. Rescan the system using full system scan and see if Norton will still find any.

That means you need extra help

by Donna Buenaventura Moderator - 9/15/05 9:10 AM In reply to: Lots of Adwares by alfmic

If you are not sure what to do to fix these adware
I suggest that you just run the scanners that I mentioned (Spybot S&D, Ad-aware SE and Microsoft Antispyware)

Then get Hijackthis:

Get Hijackthis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe
(that is a direct download)
It is important that you run HijackThis.exe in its own folder so the backup files that HijackThis creates will not be accidentally deleted.

Open 'My Computer', then double-click to open C:\ (or the drive letter that your Windows is installed on)
In the menu bar, click File-->New-->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to ''HJT'' or ''HijackThis''. Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it.

Click 'Scan' button. Click 'Save log' button. Save the 'hijackthis.log' in your desktop. Copy and paste the content of 'hijackthis.log' and post the log file in any forums that offers HijackThis analysis. You may find more of this forum in http://asap.maddoktor2.com/

Do not fix anything using Hijackthis without the guidance of Hijackthis analyst.

The HijackThis analyst will help you remove whatever they find bad items.

NAV can't remove those. You need to use another removal tool or remove them manually.

Please do this:

First download LSPFix.exe from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Save it in your desktop. Do NOT use yet. You will only use that if your internet connection will not work. The LSPFix.exe will try to repair the Winsock so you can connect to the net again.

Next, download and install Spybot S&D and Microsoft Antispyware Beta
Update the programs and run a scan in SAFE mode
Also run a scan using Ad-aware SE in safe mode.

May I repeat, run a scan using the above programs in SAFE mode and run each of them twice if they detected the adware.

If none of the above programs will handle the said adware, proceed with to the next method.

Manual removal instruction for NDotNet is here or go to http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html and follow the instructions on how to remove.

To remove Ezula, get the FixEzula.exe from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.ezula.html
Use that to try to remove Ezula

As for Adware.GameSp, is that Adware.GameSpy Arcade?
If so, see http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.gamespyarcade.html
for manual removal

For adware Download.Adware, locate Bindlong.exe then delete it while you are in SAFE mode. If you cannot find the Bindlong.exe, reconfigure your system to show hidden files and folders then try to locate the Bindlong.exe again then delete it.

If still got problem in removing those, download HijackThis.exe (that's a direct download).
Do not do anything using HijackThis.exe. Most of them are harmless

You can find those forum in http://asap.maddoktor2.com/
PLEASE post your log in one (1) forum only. Do not post in many forums.

Look in your add/delete programs (in C.P.) for

by tobeach - 9/14/05 9:57 PM In reply to: Lots of Adwares by alfmic

a program called "Gamespy" if found delete (un-install).
Have you recently installed a retail game ?? Several, in default install will install gamespy claiming needed to play on line or to try other games. In my case it came in "Scrabble complete". You can & should delete all Gamespy files (or let Anti-spywares remove). I beleive in my case, I un-installed the Scrabble & then re-installed using "Custom install" option leaving out the older version Direct X (mine was newer) as well as all Extras from Gamespy. To me, the security risk of online is not worth it. I play Scrabble with others in house. Hope this (in addition to others suggestions) is of some help. :-)

Having trouble getting the game to work

by bettyjoy - 12/30/05 12:23 PM In reply to: Look in your add/delete programs (in C.P.) for by tobeach

I was so glad to see someone else is using this game and it looks like you are successful with it. I am having trouble with "hanging" , a black screen, no game and cannot even turn off the computer once I click on play to start the game. Prompted by the cd must be in the computer to play, I insert and that is the end of the good times. Any ideas? I have direct X 9 and am running xp home.
