Punishment for virus creators--fine and hired by Microsoft

by Darder - 9/13/05 6:20 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Microsoft needs help in determining all the ways to access their holes for security, and as far as I can see, there is no better punishment, and working on the fine which should be steep (kinda like community service and then a career).

Prison term

by Lisa T - 9/13/05 6:22 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I would like to see them in prison and unable to go near a computer. I don't know for how long perhaps the sentance would be related to how much damage was done.

Then after parole they should not be able to have access to a computer of any kind for a certain amount of time.

It should be a federal crime so they become felons.

We Need More Eunuchs

by coover - 9/13/05 6:22 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

If a male, the offender should be made a Eunuch with a rusty, dull knife.

If female, all her male sons should be made Eunuchs with a rusty, dull knife.

Punishment for Virus Creators

by CAPPNM - 9/13/05 6:23 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The time in prison time and fees should be equal to the amount of damage that they caused. If they take down half of the country, then they should be fined $10K and 10 years of public service to fix each and every computer they screwed up.

Prison, fines and community service

by dslovejoy - 9/13/05 6:27 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The low lifes that write viruses, spyware, worms, etc., should be sent to prison until the technology outpaces their knowledge base.

They should be fined so much that they could never afford to buy another system.

They should be banned from EVER owning or using a computer again.

They should be given so much community service that they will be too tired to reproduce and breed another generation of slime.

Punishment.

by RHATCH - 9/13/05 6:30 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Depending upon the "damage" caused by the perpetraitor, Punishment can range from a very public scourging with a cat-o-nine tails, to some of the most elagently exquisitly painful torture techniques used by my captors in Vietnam. Bullies of any kind regardless of gender should never be allowed to flourish unchallenged. The precious rights and freedoms guaranteed by the "Bill of Rights", Has been always and will continue to be "paid for" with the Blood of men and women willing to take on the predetors. Many of these people who do these things are snotty inelectuals with some kind of "axe" to grind. Then we have the brats and puinks who think the world owes them a living and who never earn or pay for anything they acquire.

Prison + Fine + Never Again in a PC

by yelps - 9/13/05 6:34 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

This guys, should:

1º Stay at least 4 or 5 years in prison.
2º Pay a fine according to the damage they have produced (talking in M$)
3º Never touch a PC again in their lifes.

With that, I'm sure they will be the example to the thousends of other piracy and virus creators that should not exist. They only destroy what we create with out effort.

Daniel.

There is no punishment severe enough...

by Pikepole - 9/13/05 6:34 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

The thousands of dollars in damages, wasted hours of productivity are almost impossible to calculate. In my estimation there is no punishment too severe. Putting these vermin to death is the easy way out for them. Make them stay around and suffer with the rest of us...

True. Skin them alive on national TV. And take 3 days . . .

by spottydog3 - 9/15/05 9:52 PM In reply to: There is no punishment severe enough... by Pikepole

No one convicted of releasing a computer worm/virus should be allowed to live out the week. Their execution should be slow and horribly painful. AND IT SHOULD BE TELEVISED LIVE. Only this can possibly deter the casual non-professional virus writer. Of course, nothing can deter the professional.

Don't separate the law into physical or digital...

by Nerfherder007 - 9/13/05 6:34 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Technically, this would amount to criminal trespass and vandalism if they were walking into your home and destroying property. In many states in the US, it is legally acceptable to shoot a person on site should you catch them in the act.

I would recommend expanding the current trespass laws to include one's personal computer. While the unfortunate reality that most don't get caught remains, in situations like these recent arrests, examples would surely be made. Examples that would deter the criminals that are in reach of the long arm of the law.

For many, a computer is as much a part of their livelihood as their home or car. In some cases, even more so. These criminals should be punished as if they had threatened the very livelihood of all those affected by their actions.

1 count of criminal trespass * 1000 or more for the worst offenders... At least life for repeat offenders.

If this was possible, would you do it?

Punishment

by muddhen - 9/13/05 6:34 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Jail time? Some, depending on the previous arrests. Fine, a lot, with a long repayment schedule. And years of community service, supervised and specifically helping the challenged, the disavantaged children, the poor and the elderly. All of the most needy people, least they never forget thier crime. And goes with the punishment the leason of charity and kindness that may turn these self centered people into something good, eventually. Of course, none of the community work can be computer related, you dob't send a drunk to a bar for refreshments.

Many here seem to have put the writers

by royc - 9/13/05 6:35 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

several notches above where they should be.
Sure some of them know a lot about computers but most just copy code from somewhere and do a minor mod to it.

There should be somewhere, like in a jungle, that they could be put.

and with no computer access

by trekker75 - 9/13/05 6:35 PM In reply to: What punishment should be handed down to virus creators? by Marc Bennett Moderator

they should be sent to prison, quarantined from all electronic gear, including computers and cell phones, away from the general prison population for a minimum of 15 years, NO parole or early outs here either. Maybe they could learn an honest profession whlie there, such as a lawyer, heh, heh, heh. Nah, they don't need to have accsess to printed material either, after all ain't prison for punishment??
