Preventing users from deleting Icons on thier Desktops!

by imc18 - 9/9/05 7:57 AM

I have 48 pc's in my office that are laoded with special software! I install Icons on users Desktops
for these programs! My users delete these Icons and then they complain to me when they have to use the applicaions that they cant find the Icon to launch them.

I want to take ownership of the icons or the desktops
so they cannot modify the Icons or desktops.
Windows NT had a setting in user profiles that would restore the desktops when the user logged in, But I cant find this function in Windows XP Pro..

can anyone help me.

Thanks

Mike

Make them read-only. It are just files (.lnk-files to be exact) in a folder.
And why put it on their desktop? Why not use Start>Programs? Less obvious to delete, and if they prefer it on the desktop they can copy it themselves.

Putting the links in the 'All users' part of the desktop (in XP) - I don't know by head if there's a Start>Programs equivalent, but it could very well be, please check - might make a difference also. I think you must be administrator to delete them there.

Hope this helps.

You could set file permissions OR...

you could make use of policies.

You might also try the Microsoft Windows XP Shared Computer Toolkit.
