xtreme edition features h/t technology so 4 cores
while regular ones dont have h/t so will only be 2 cores
H/T has in Hyper Threading? Well, H/T is listed for both processors. So, that means Extreme Edition has twice as many cores as the regular then?

it looks like the regular 840 doesn't have HT but the Extreme Edition does. plus i read somewhere that the Extreme Edition is not multiplier locked which would make it easier to overclock.
the price of the Extreme Edition is almost double that of the already overpriced D 840. a D 830 is less than half the price.
on the amd side an athlon 64 x2 4800 costs less than an 840 Extreme Edition, a 4400 costs about the same as a D 840, and a 3800 saves 30% over a D 840. good price, performance, less power consumption and noise
and it usually has more cache
also, nerdboy it does not mean 4 cores...
it means you have 4 virtual cores's, and 2 physical cores's
in comparison to 2 physical cores
the operating system will say it's 4 CPU's, which means it might have issues with some operating systems that don't support 4-way SMP (i'm doubting windows9x to work, and i'm doubting WindowsXP Home to work w/o some patches...Pro should work along with most other NT based products (Win2000 and beyond, not NT4)
The Pemtium EE has HT and unlocked multipliers but it cost a fortune. Recently Intel haven't getting good reviews on the EE and the D's. Next year, a better version of the D and EE comes out with a smaller die and generates less heat. The new D's or the 9xx Presler series still doesn't have HT but the new EE does but upgrading to the EE will cost not only the processor but the a new mobo chipset as well.
Above all, get a AMD Athlon 64 X2, they are so better and lot cheaper too. Faster speed and already is smaller in die than Intel.
their more expensive until you get to comparing the 4800 and the EE 840
Intel is also dropping HT from the market lineup in the coming months, as it's "not needed"
at least, that's the current word
