I suppose you watch out for big brother too!!

I am currently taking a microcomputer aps class from a retired person who spent over twenty years in the Air Force and they have not said anything like that at all, but next class I will ask specifically about your posting.

God Bless,

Open source is not ready for prime time.

It does not offer the features Microsoft products are able to offer. Build a better mouse trap and people will beat a path to your door. Build a better mouse trap and your detractors will try to beat you with word, since they obviouusly don't find the masses beating on their doors to get in.

"The US Air Force has had enough of Microsoft's security problems. But rather than switch to an alternative, it has struck a deal with CEO Steve Ballmer for a specially configured version of Windows to be used by all its 525,000 personnel and civilian support staff."

Yes, It was a breeze

Saved all my programs and drivers to disk and simply ran SP2 from the CD not Windows update. Installed it on the C partition and it was done. Had to make a few changes to Zone Alarm and up date a few drivers was all. If you go thru Windows update it might tell you need to update a lot more drivers and software than really necessary. All the programs on the D partition were left in tact. Everything has been fine since Not a single problem, not one system crash in 7 months.

I've had no trouble - except with toshiba laptop

by sordello - 9/4/05 12:30 PM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by ferrari_ace

I use a laptop model
Toshiba Satellite Pro 4320
Windows 98SE or XP SP2 - Depends on the hard drive installed.

There is an issue that although rare in occurance it only happens with any NT operating systems. In every day operation there are no problems but, when connected to the internet the machine will lock up - freeze. The only way to get it going is to restart via the power switch - a bit scary. It usually freezes only when scrolling either by wheel or by sidebar. I love XP mostly because it works so smoothly when installing new devices but finally I wanted the resources that only could be freed up by going back to 98SE - Win 2K had the same internet freeze problems as XP on this laptop. My Dell Optiplex is smooth as silk on all operating systems. I have to assume it is a Toshiba issue and it was the same on both the pro 460 and the current pro 4300 series.
This is the only problem that I've ever had with Windows - ever. It has only been with one series of computers and it does not seem to be a specific problem to XP but more of a problem with NT operating systems in general.

SP2

by MavMin - 9/5/05 11:39 AM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Yes, and most folks that bring me machines with problems usually have not loaded SP2 or kept up with their updates. When I install SP 2 and clean up the junk with Adaware and Spybot their systems run very smoothly.

XP SP2

by acechaos - 9/5/05 9:18 PM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I am pretty sure I updated many months ago, like last winter or so when it first came out. You get the automatic update message and you just do it. Why wouldn't you want to have MS revamp your machine with a few clicks? You paid for it. I have noticed a lot of corrections in IE. Still not perfect, but better than it was. It's a no brainer.

Here are my SP2 woes

by vicloc0 - 9/5/05 11:11 PM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I advise against upgrading your Windows XP to SP2. I have completed the upgrade on three machines and they all became slow, buggy and eventually crashed.

Problems with SP2 in a nutshell:

1. Computer performance became sluggish. Bootup time dramatically increased. Application launch time was so slow that using the computer became a test of patience.

2. Windows firewall interfered with or rendered inoperable certain internet programs and network resources, like printers and other computers on my home network. After disabling the Windows firewall through Control Panel, I received a constant nag-message to reinable it.

3. SP2 starts extra un-needed "services", which contibute to performance lethargy. Go to Blackviper.com to learn which services you can turn off and how to turn them off.

4. SP2 doesn't recognize all antivirus programs. SP2 generates a constant nag-message urging you to install antivirus protection, although you may already be protected. the nag-meaasge can be turned off throught Control Panel.

5. SP2 renders Windows XP "untweakable". For those of you who like to try experimental software or modify certain XP settings to your personal tastes, be advised that SP2 makes the O/S more stringent; less tweakable. I personally disagree with this approach by Microsoft. If I drop the cash for a machine and an O/S, then I feel that I should be able to make any adjustments I please. Imagine buying a new car and not being able to adjust the seat.

With the release of Service Pack 2, Microsoft has in some instances locked out the end user from personalizing his system under the guise of "critical service packs" and "security patches". Nevertheless, the darn "upgrade" eventually caused every machine onto which I installed it to crash.

Now, I dare not venture past Service Pack 1. I believe that SP1 truly was and is a worthy upgrade that fixed problems with Windows XP due to Microsoft's determination to rush the O/S to market without fully testing it. SP2, however, was more for Microsoft's benefit than the end user.

SP2 Sux!!!!

by Cdkutusu - 9/6/05 4:59 AM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I installed SP2 when i first got my new computer, it is a complete disaster! Before my new computer, i used my old Celeron 900 for 4 years with Windows 98 and i can give you my word that SP2 makes XP even worse from Millenium edition!

First of all, SP2 makes computer really slow, before it my computer starts nearly in 45 seconds, and now it takes 1.5 minutes or something like that.

Second, it creates endless problems with all java applications and that problems can not be solved. Lots of my friends got SP2 and some have these stupid problems and some don't and those who have these problems can't solve this.

Even worse, lots of other programs have problems with SP2.

Finally, my suggestion is not to install SP2, keep going with old versions...

Windows Service Pack 2

by JackPoisson - 9/6/05 3:24 PM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It is the only update that ever caused me a new problem. On a new Toshiba laptop it would not alow me to reboot after the download. My computer tech said a mouse incomaptability and one or two othe rminor problems caused it and charged me $400.00, which I consider fair. Reformatting the whole disk and reloading all programs caused me to lose much time and was inconvenient. AT least it was not my main computer, and yet I am now glad it is over. I still prefer Windows 2000 to Windows XP but is supposed to be easier for laptops.

Actually "Yes, but I'm not sure what effect it had."

by Cadillac84 - 9/7/05 8:10 AM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

It certainly didn't hurt anything. I've done it on about six of my ten candidates and have about six others that came with SP2 installed OEM.

I take back the not knowing part. There was one which may not even have had SP1 (can't remember) that had gotten really bollixed up with adware and spyware stuff -- a home installation that was used mostly by little tykes -- and I did notice a vast improvement after installing SP2. However, even then, I did a lot of other things (SpyBot, Adaware, etc.) that might have had more or less effect.

I guess what I can say is that I ordered a couple CDs from MS so I wouldn't have to do it online. I've installed the SP2 several times and have no bad stories to tell.

I recommend people do it and the easiest way is to pretend you don't have a high speed connection and click the link at Windows Update "how can I get SP2" and order a CD. It'll cost you about five bucks for shipping and you can share it with others (they ask that you pass it on when you finish with it!). I am comforted having the CD on hand in the event I have to reinstall I can also do the SP2 update at the same time.

My 2¢

Installing Windows XP2

by navy32 - 9/11/05 5:37 AM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Yes, I installed this and ended up having to have my computer wiped clean. It started with one problem and went on adding more problems until I couldn't get into my emails. I have it in now but I have the disc to put it in. If you download, be sure and turn off your antivirus or you may get the same problems. That is what they said caused my problems, I left it turned on when I down loaded it first time. It works fine now, but when I downloaded it the second time you can bet my virus protection was off.
