I had tried to update to SP2 twice on two different computers -- one a HP desktop, the other a Fujitsu notebook -- and I had the same problem with both. The load went A-OK and both computers ran well for the first few hours. After that their performance became irratic. Minimized windows would jump to the foreground without prompting; programs would halt or shut down without warning; and the directory tree in Windows Explorer became cluttered with folders marked "desktop" for every program or file that had opened since the start of the session. I tried to find information and fixes at the Microsoft support site with no luck. I had to uninstall SP2 from both machines just to keep them running.
I use two machines most of the time
1. the more modern, faster machine runs XP Pro +SP2 : no problems
2. the older, slower - and more cluttered machine run XP Home - I have tried on a number of occasions to upgrade to SP2 but every time the machine grinds to a halt - it boots up and then sits and sulks! I have more or less given up on the project - more so as it is now functioning very smoothly (probably it'll now crash completely in the next hour or two!!) and seems to be very little different in it's function that my other machine ... hence very little incentive to do the upgrade.
For the record - to remove boot into safe mode and then use add/remove software to take the upgrade out ... I don't think I had much luck using restore points - since the machine basically halted - and I couldn't get the funtion to operate. Must admit - haven't tried the upgrade for 6 to 8 months now - have switched to Thunderbird and Firefox - and removed all Nortons security software - so it may be worth another try!

First point. If you buy a new PC or build one and buy WinXP what you get now is a CD with XP2 already integrated. And it's great to have it that way if you ever have to do a re-install.
Second point. If you have more than one PC (with my wife we have four) running XP why would you NOT want them all the same. We run XP2 on all (2 x XP Pro and 2 x XP Home).
Third point. XP2 is the best and most stable OS to date from Microsoft - even if that is no great accolade.
I have built and maintained my systems for many years. I use Windows XP and had installed SP2 when it was 1st released, only to have several 3rd party software conflicts. I use ZoneAlarm for a software firewall and a Linksys router to a cable modem. After installing SP2 my Kodak Easyshare photo transfer software would lock-up. I have a removable 2nd hard drive/caddy that is only used for back-up with Norton SystemWorks Pro which includes the ability to Ghost the entire contents of a drive - not like an image file. SP2 prevented this feature by not allowing the Ghost boot-up from a floppy. The only way I could get rid of SP2 completely was to delete enough of the operating software until there was no function, then format the drive and ghost my precious back-up to the main drive. I have found other 3rd party issues and don't recommend SP2 to anyone. I validated these problems by trying the process 2 more times. Microsoft left a bad taste in my mouth. Thank you Norton Ghost for the ability to have a complete bit for bit back-up I can stash away for emergencies.

since I installed sp2 started my problems.
I had in my PC zone alarm and use to work very good, but since I istalled sp2 zone alarm became usesless and started giving a lot of troubles. Also the arrow of the mouse after a few seconds without moving it start movig alone through the screen. And on top of that my Kodak program begun giving me problems.
So, i decided to ininistall sp2 and everything came back to normal.
But as my window update kept telling me to upgrade with sp2 i did it again , and the same problems arouse again.
Finally I decided to erase zone alarm and windows is working quite good exept for the mouse problem that is not much headache and the kodak program that is not 100% ok but I still can use it.
So I still have sp2 and I upgrade it any time the update program advise me.
Well, I hope this comments can help and if any solutions available for those minors problems cames up I would be glad to try them.
Thank you for the comments,
I upgraded to XP SP2 about six months but I had so many problems with AOL and other programs that I ended up removing it. I already have a firewall program, etc. so I don't see the benefit to SP2.
With SP2 I don't seem to have any problems plus I've just loaded SP3 and the system seems to be running better and if I have to do a repair it is a lot quicker and not as much hassel.
No problems except I had to reinstall a camera driver. everything else worked fine.. I just wish I could dump the Firewall , I use Zonealarm with spyware stopper and it works great.. I have sp 2 on disc and not a problem..
After installing the SP2 pack I was no longer able to use my old scanner and ancient printer. A search for updated drivers was rewarded with reminders that after a few years, the manufacturers quit making software updates on older units.
This forced me to update (BUY) a new printer and a new scanner even though both units were working fine before the patch was installed.
On the upside, I love my new all in one unit and the extra space I have on the desk now and the kids down the street who are using Windows ME still are enjoying the old units.
Had I realized this would happen before I installed the updates (done my homework) I would have still opted for the added features and security of the installation.
i know some people upgraded to sp2 without any problems and some people had tons of problems as for me even if i wanted to i cannot upgrade to sp2. i can download and install it without a problem but once it's time for my computer to boot up forget it my screen turns black then blue and keeps restarting and all i can get from the pc manufactor is that there's nothing they can do, they tell me to call microsoft but that costs so much. then i read that it was a problem with my pentium 4 id something like that so my pc will never see sp2
I have installed SP 2 and have experienced no problems. I have failed to note any "improvement" as the issue is more one of protection than improved performance.
Until you know you've been shot at the question: has your "bullet-resistant" vest helped you? is a tough one to answer. I am aware that there are many dangers out there, so I have to admit having some protection is better than having none.
I have done over 50 SP2 updates on various manufacturers computers. To date I have had no problems with installing or with drivers. If you heed Microsofts warnings about updates, spyware, adware, and virus's prior to doing the update you stand a much better chance of being successful.
These are all things you should be doing anyway. What's the big deal? There SHOULD have been a response for, ''Updated with no problems.''
SP2 came in an automatic update the first time, my DVD drives and software suddenly didn't work anymore, I had to reload the old OS SP1. The second time I used the PC recovery discs after different issues, and installed SP2 immediately before anything else, worked fine that time.
I am very satisfied with SP 2. It is a very good improvement, my computer works better and faster with SP 2.
But it is necessary to include all criterias into the catalog for giving a relevant opinion if XP SP 2 is to recommend or not, such as design, performance, color, speed, efficience, price, etc.
The are many more criterias as only the technical aspect, which most peoble put at first.
The progress of the time makes that each new release of such an important engin like "Microsoft" is of benefit for everyone in every sense.
When I upgraded to SP2:
Complete installation of MS Office 97 Professional has problems registering components of the HTML editor parts which means I have to uncheck HTML in order to get it to install correctly.
