Have you installed Windows XP SP2?

Yes, it's a big improvement (tell us more)
Yes, but it didn't change anything (are you sure?)
Yes, and it's causing problems (like what?)
No, I'm waiting until most bugs are fixed (really?)
No, I'm waiting until it is absolutely necessary (when will that be?)
What is SP2?
I don't use XP (what do you use?)
I don't do Windows (what do you use?)

Broke my networking

by insx - 9/2/05 4:21 AM In reply to: Have you installed Windows XP SP2? by Marc Bennett Moderator

When I install service pack 2 my networking breaks (my broadband connection goes down and I can't ping). I have no idea why or how to fix it. When I uninstall the service pack everything works again.

I have yet to know a person that has installed SP2 that DOESN"T have problems....until I do, I won't put it on my system...I do not trust it.

No problems on my network.

by Jamie314 - 9/2/05 5:06 AM In reply to: I hear that a lot... by Funsunset

I administer a school network and we deployed Service Pack 2 across all 50-60 workstations without any hitches.

The only minor gripe is that the Security Centre did not recognise Norton as a valid AV/Firewall software until we applied a patch from Symantec. Even then, it was the individual patching of 60 desktops that annoyed me, not SP2.

If you're installing as a home user/SOHO network, then you won't have many problems at all. Hell, it even plays nicely with a dual-boot Linux installation on around 5 admin units and connects up happily to a Samba server. I was pleasantly surprised.

Consider this

1 - I put it on my three PCs (Win XP Pro) last year, had absolutely no problems. 2 - In graduate school we just built several three PC networks, two XP Pro (SP2) clients and one Windows 2k3 standard server. Each little network was connected to the schools big network which was then connected to the outside world. 3 - All Major PC manufactures are shipping PC with Windows XP (SP2) preinstalled.

In school you should be learning Linux!

by clintbrot - 9/4/05 5:33 PM In reply to: Consider this by msgale

So much easier to compile programs and rock solid stability. No need for sp2 with GNU/LINUX!!!
Check out Mepis GNU/LINUX and you'll never want to run a broken coded OS again. The added benefit of a lower TCO that microsoft has spent millions trying to convince people otherwise. When you can get every program you ever dreamed of for free why would you pay thousands for software license??? Run a server or an OS from a Live CD.

Linux in Schools? Wheres the money in it?

by komputerklinicri - 9/5/05 7:07 AM In reply to: In school you should be learning Linux! by clintbrot

Seeings how 85% of all desktop systems in the world are running windows in one flavor or another and since 90% of Small Medium Businesses run a combo of windows and office I think I want my children to learn what gives them the best opportunity for a career it IT if that is there choice. Nothing against Linux but until it is a mainstream OS with all the support available to Microsoft users I think I would take a pass on it in school. Maybe as an add on elective if the school could hire linux/unix admins on top of the windows/mcse admins hmm another factor to consider changing over thousands of windows machines to linux boxes now i wonder how much in billable hours that would cost???

Curious & strange.

by Albertv - 9/2/05 6:05 AM In reply to: I hear that a lot... by Funsunset

I have a mixed network of XP & W2K. I upgraded all PCs with XP1 to XP2 via a free disk from MS. No problems. W2K was upgraded to SP4. All my equipment in the PCs are about 4 to 2 yrs old, all self build. All have a minimum RAM of 512 Mb. I let my Linksys router handout IPs and upgrade the NICs via the hardware vendor drivers. The software networking in XP is disabled. I think this is my secret to my success.

I installed SP2 with no problems. The SP2 update permits me to see my 160GB main hard drive in total rather than having to divide the drive to cope with the 128GB upper limit with SP1. The machine seems to run better all around.

I installed SP2 and have had no problems and I use XP Pro upgrade for my Autocad. However I can not tell is anything is improved, so I assume it is working like it is supposed.

XP2 didn't have the drivers needed for my system

by cnetsherwood - 9/2/05 4:32 AM In reply to: Broke my networking by insx

Several video and graphics applications would not work.
All worked fine when i uninstalled.
I do not have the time to try a third time to mess with it.
