deciding driver updates
by Znymuse - 9/4/05 9:41 AM In reply to: Don't let MS decide your hardware drivers! by AlbertvI have always gone to the manufacturers sites for driver updates and selected the ones appropriate for my hardware and operating system. After a few years, they simply stop updating the older units which renders them useless on a newer system.
It seemed a small price to pay for the added security and since there is almost always someone out there that can still use them, I have yet to put anything into a landfill directly.

Nvidia, ATI, SIS,Intel, to name a few all have updates available. As with any major update to any OS do your homework first before attempting to install it. I have been running SP2 since it's pre release beta and have had absolutly no problems. If your network breaks it is most likely the built in windows firewall turned on by default in SP2 it was available all along in XP but off by default, in SP2 Microsoft turns it on it is usually only a few tweaks to the firewall to solve most networking issues.

BELIEVE THOSE WHO CREATED THE VIRUS TO GAIN MORE MONEY ....), but nonetheless the SP2 is better than the SP1, since I have the SP2 installed, more an antivirus, not more virus, in the SP1 the antivirus was collapse my windows

Does anybody know why this would happen and how to get around it?
Just for info, I use the now defunct Microsoft network hardware.
Netgear wireless PCI card

(I uninstalled the offending drivers and connected using some old kit that worked with SP2).
Oddly the Netgear laptop cards all worked OK.
So if you're connection has died - first thing I'd do is check with the suppliers of the kit you use to connect to the internet and update the drivers.
PS - the netwear stuff is great once this was ironed out.

I have installed XP2 about 1 year ago and it is working fine on my system. I keep up with all the updates and have never had any problems, I also keep my computer on 24/7.
It slowed my system and I had to buy a new HD

When I installed it for the first time, my P4 3 ghz became vey slow. It took exact 90 seconds to become operational at startup. So I uninstalled and it became fast again. But as recommended I tried to install several times, removed firewal, etc and finally phoned Dell (my desktop is Dell). The attendant recomended to format the HD. So, as this is absurd, I bought a new HD, reinstalled windows with sp2, threw away my norton internet security and now it's running smoothly.

If it did slow your system it should not have slowed it enough for you to be concerned,Norton antivirus will slow your system down more then SP2, Did you turn off Nortons antivirus BEFORE you installed SP2, and SP2 has all the updates from SP1 and any you might have missed, I found out from Dell users that you dont call Tech support if you want to fix anything, Dell users tell me the same thing you found out,RELOAD that is there fix all 
, next time you have a problem with a Microsoft Download or Update call Microsoft not Dell.

I decided to finally upgrade to SP2 the other week. I have had reconfigure a lot of programs in the process. Microsoft security isn't the best and as we all know running several firewalls etc can cause conflicts. So the first thing i had to do was to disable the SP2 firewall and pop-up stopper so as not to intefere with the ones i already have running. The next thing was to disable the widows update from installing automatically. I like to see exactly what it is i'm going to download first. Next issue was with my wireless router. It just didn't like SP2. I had to apply an update to get that running. In fact there are a lot of programs that require an update if you use SP2. Why this should be, i don't know. I also have a few sites i use for downloading files etc. Guess what, yep they don't like SP2 either. In fact the only reason i installed SP2 in the first place was that i was told i would need this for the forthcoming launch of IE7. I bet that was just a nasty rumour and i never really needed SP2 in the first place or are Microsoft going to remove our options so that we have no choice but to run these programs at their behest.
