FAVORITE FREE PROGRAMS

I am NO computer guru for sure. But I was able to d/l and use SpyBot, Ad Aware, AVG and Zone Alarm. I muddled through the Zone Alarm, but think I got it after a little while. For newbies don't hesitate, if I can use them so can you!

For security, I use Avast anti-virus, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware, and the free version of MailWasher. For office apps, I use OpenOffice.org. For photo editing, I use 602Pro PC SUITE-602Photo. I also use the apps that came bundled with the system: MS Works database program, MS Money, and Outlook Express for email.

Perhaps it isn't only an 'Office tool' but it is to me.

by ronwill - 8/30/05 6:38 PM In reply to: Which type of free application do you find most valuable? by Marc Bennett Moderator

Almost every new program comes with online documentation in the ".PDF" format. This would make my vote go to Adobe Reader. I can not think of a better free download. Ron

Wonderful Freeware

by juditte - 8/30/05 6:57 PM In reply to: Which type of free application do you find most valuable? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I use Irfanview as my viewer and slideshow maker. Picassa for printing pictures and posting to net. Spybot, Ad-aware, RegistryCleaner, and pretty much all of Karenware's great programs. I use AVG and the free ZoneAlarm - great combo. I use free players and music editors. I use OpenOffice and 602software and the list goes on and on.

Where I can, I contribute a bit or if it has a reasonable shareware version I buy that for almost all my programs. I have actually donated to most of the above just because I want them to be around forever. I prefer to pay both for their compensation and for no ads or nags. There are a zillion programs out there which are gems from $10 to $50.

A GIANT THANKS to all the wonderful programmers who are putting out all these lovely programs. I am so much happier giving my $ to these people who keep programming advancing and competitive.

Skype, Zone Alarm, AVG

by hamako - 8/30/05 6:58 PM In reply to: Which type of free application do you find most valuable? by Marc Bennett Moderator

This are my most used freeware applications. SKYPE is just great. Talked recently for 30 minutes from a Lufthansa airplane (they have fee-based WLAN on board!) for free to a friend in the US - compared to satellite phone with $10 connection fee and $10 for each minute.

Zone Alarm saved my butt a couple of times, preventing spyware to access the Internet and several potential attacks from hackers.

And AVG is always a good virus filter, which is updated almost every day. Works like a charm

A suggestion to all users of freeware: If you can afford it, use the commercial version or at least give them some donation. I think that these guys deserve it!

Zone Alarm most functional freewarea

by Renee - 8/30/05 9:09 PM In reply to: Skype, Zone Alarm, AVG by hamako

Zone Alarm is really a great software firewall for 0$.. and also Spybot Search and Destroy. Both do a pretty darn good job for folks who can't afford the retail products or are not technically able to handle some of the more complex higher end versions. EVERYONE needs to be running both of these type products now days! in addition to antivirus software that is updated at LEAST once a week if not daily.

How much time do you have???

by here2earn - 8/30/05 6:59 PM In reply to: Which type of free application do you find most valuable? by Marc Bennett Moderator

I also use a lot of great freeware. I have one that has been extremely valuable. It is CrapCleaner. It does a fantastic job of keeping my system clean of pure crap. ccleaner.com

I do suggest that you know what you are doing and not just delete every single thing that it suggests that be deleted. Having said that, check off the items you want it to scan for and let it rip. You will be amazed at the amount of pure crap it can dig up that is totally unnecessary to run your computer.

Once you get all the crap removed, run a defrag and you won't believe how much faster your system will respond.

Additionally, I use emailstripper to get rid of all the little ">" that are in forwarded emails. Add to my list PopupStopper, CWShredder, Stinger, HiJackThis, Spybot Search and Destroy and a couple of the free virus scanners to layer ontop of my McAfee.

The absolute neatest freebie I have found in a long time is GoogleEarth. I have visited all areas of the earth via this little toy. Talk about adventures in surfing!!!!!!!!
