Couldn't have said it better.
Free is NOT necessarily Cheap.
I find I use Picasa great for basic photo organizing; nice and easy to use - better (for me) than the photo album component of PhotoShop Elements 3.0 which I have and use for photo editing.
AdAware seems to catch the same stuff as Spybot. I had been trying both and keeping them both up-to-date seemed redundant.
Firefox is great browser - I really enjoy the Tab feature allowing multiple WEB pages open, providing a window where it is very easy to leaf back and forth.
And Thunderbird works well for Email - I think I started to use it simply because I had somehow fouled up Outlook and saw no reason to go back (to Outlook).
AVG,Zone Alarm, Spybot S&D, Adaware, Open Office, a couple of photo editors/viewers[Irfanview,Picasa, etc],XPlorer2[instead of Windows Explorer], FireFox and Slimbrowser-naturally IE came with the PC, but I rarely use it. Gmail is my primary mail. Legacy for my family tree. Nero came with the burner I installed so I guess I paid for that. Can't win them all, but WinME doesn't have burning software although there are some free ones out there.
I use the basic free Incredimail, and I LOVE it! I have a lot of signatures that I have had made for me, and love also the thousands of different stationeries that are available everywhere on the net, for use with Incredimail.

I started off with the Freeware Incredimail, but got hooked, so I bought everything they had to offer. I like to support a company who provides a quality "free" product to the masses, at reasonable prices. I've gotten other people hooked on Incredimail. I run Windows XP Professional and also run Norton Internet Security. I have absolutely no problems with the free program or the paid program.
LONG LIVE INCREDIMAIL. The only way to send EMAILS.
I LOVE IncrediMail! I have the full version but had basic freeware for a couple of years. My biggest disappointment is not with IncrediMail, but with the e-mail systems that will not accept it. I try to be very creative with my e-mails: music et al. But most of the ones who use like online e-mail services don't get everything I send and sometimes none of it. Yahoo! is my favorite culprit. I most always include music & Yahoo! never allows it to be heard even tho the little bullhorn shows and everything. BUT LONG LIVE CHOICES!
I've used incredimail for many years, and I love it also. There is such a vast selection of letters, skins, notifiers etc. Great program.
Wow, this is the best e-mail program, ever!! I had it for about two years and then bought it, then I bought the Gold membership for life when they came out with it. But for freeware it is great. I also use Spybot-search & destroy, AdAware and Webshots.
God Bless all!
I used to use Incredemail but it was causing problems, so I went back to Outlook Express.
Others I use are Freeram XPlite, Spywareblaster, Avast, Picasa 2, Killbox, Cleanup, Screenhunter 4.0, Autoscreen 1.0, Zipcentral, JPG file converter.
They all do their job very well. As good or better than the purchase programs. I'm very happy with them.
Avast anti-virus. Always free and runs transparently on both my Windows 98 and Windows XPSP2 OSs.
Easy to manually update. Has caught three e-mail viruses since I started using it.
I no longer have to cope with the increasing prices and outrageously poor support from Symantec.
The only problem that I have run into is that Zone Alarm will not run with Avast under Win XPSP2 (the two apps run fine together under Win98) -- So I do not use ZA for Win XP.
MS Works came free with my computer. I have learned to do almost anything I need to do with it.
I use Adobe Acrobat Reader for viewing PDF files even though I hate the inability to manipulate it.
I use Mozilla Firefox for browsing and Thunderbird for E-Mail. I have used several others and prefer Mozilla.
I have used several free security systems but have found my inexpensive V-Com software beats Norton and McAfee.
I have used several spyware and adware systems and now have Spybot and Adaware. They seem as good as any.
I have tried several photo systems, but usually use MS Paint for any photo manipulation that I need to do.

This is my main free application that I use daily. I would even be willing to pay for this one. Also, DVD FAB is another one that I find usefull but it is a trial period but is great for a backup to movies DVD shrink does not cover.
Could not think really ofa good title.
Alot of music editing software i use is free or i use the trial. I use alot of trial software and if it is something i need on a regular basis like DVD SHRINK I finally pay for the product. But most of the time I just need a software title for one single project and cannot justify paying more than 30 bucks for a program that i only need once maybe twice.
The software that you described is a paid copy.
free - freeware ... no payments - ever!
You are descibing getting shareware, or trials to see if you like it before buying. Nothing wrong with that at all. With so many programmers out there selling so many variations of the same type of programs, I like a "prove it works before I pay you, and find you scammed me" approach too.
But I think there is a difference between a "free before you pay" usage of software and absolutely free.

I have been using picasa, freshview, and irfanview to edit pictures. Also use grisofts AVG antivirus program, and Avast's antivirus program on different computers.
Can also include spybot14 and adaware106, and microsofts beta antispyware. Also zonealarm and sygates firewalls on different computers. Firefox browser is also a winner. Diskeeper lite for defragmenting and Karen's cookie viewer are very useful. In fact all of the freeware from fresh devices are winners
