I've had it with Norton.

by sizehump - 8/30/05 8:31 AM

Their antivirus software is useless. It hasn't been able to update to its most recent version for weeks, nor has their user support been able to help me with any of my problems (I won't go into detail - I'm going to just ditch the software all together).

Can anyone recommend a good antivirus provider? My O/S is Windows XP, running on a Dell Dimension 2400.

The usual.

Is to uninstall it, use their RNAV or other tools to really wipe it off the machine and reinstall it.

It's a mystery to me why Symantec expects us to know this.

-> I'm using Free AVG, Zonealarm and agree with Black Viper's assessment on spyware. I use Mozilla and Firefox and don't have to clean off the junk.

Cheers,

Bob

Some recommendations

If you're willing to pay annually for your antivirus, use Kaspersky (does need a bit of resources), or you can use NOD32 (light on resources), but you'll also need an anti-trojan like A2, Bo-Clean or Ewido to be protected efficiently.
Have a look also at BitDefender.

I do use Kaspersky 5.0 and I'm extremely happy with it.

As for the free version: Avast is an excellent choice.
You do need to register every 14 months, but it stays free. :)

No more Symantec for me either.
Not easy to remove from your system.
Use some registry cleaners too, because it leaves traces even after using their removal tool.

It could clash with another antivirus when not everything has been removed. :(

anti-virus

For what it's worth, I've been using Trend Micro PC-Cillin for almost a year and no problems. Also use MS Spyware Beta and AOL's spyware. PC is whistling right along. Of course I don't go down dark alleys and such.

Go with AntiVir ... it's free and it works.

I agree with you about Norton products. Not only are they unstable, they often cause my system to be unstable too. I'm also running Win XP on a Dell system. I really like AntiVir. It's the best anti-virus program I have found, and I've tried 'em all. The best things about it? It's free!
