Scanner Drivers Make "My Computer" folder SLOW

by thomasmarcgodskid - 8/30/05 12:11 AM

Strangest problem yet and none of the HP Pros have been able to help me at all, but then that should probably be expected.
HP Pavilion a520n
Windows XP
AMD Athlon 3200, 512mb, 160 HardDrive, Nvidia Personal Cinema video card...
Okay, so here's the deal. When Scanner driver's are installed on my computer, the computer takes 1-3 minutes to "expore" find files and drives as well as when surfing the internet anything typed into the Explorer Address Bar directly will take 1-3 minutes to go to it.
If I right click on "Start" and go to Windows Explorer, Only Desktop - My Docs - My Computer shows up. If you wait several minutes, then the rest of the drives/files/folders show up. If you click on "My Computer" then in the Window a Searching Flashlight appears and again it takes 2-3 minutes to find drives and stuff.
Also, if you are in a program and you go to open a file, the same thing happens. The Window for file browsing opens, but when you click on the Down Arrow on the right of the Bar displaying the current folder/drive to Drop Down a list of available drives, nothing shows for about 2-3 minutes.
The weirdest one of all is the Internet. When you surf the internet, ONLY if you type a web address directly into the Address field, instead of taking you immediately to the address, there is a 2-3 minute delay. Does not happen if you click on a link on a page. Also does not happen with Netscape, just Explorer.
I have tried 3 different scanners - HP, Visioneer, and Epson. I have tried installing ONLY the drivers, but not the software - the problem exist. I have tried installing the software, but then removing the drivers - the problem goes away. I've done a lot of test and undisputably, any Scanner Drivers have some weird conflict that causes this problem.
I've tried one fix I found on Microsoft where you go it and Stop WIA (Windows Imagae Aquisition) process - this has no affect.
I need to be able to use a scanner with my computer, but you gotta have drivers to do that and the drivers cause this issue.
Anyone else heard of this or have any suggestions????

Try a real file browser.

For example, the effect is not seen if I use Gyula's Navigator. Explorer is doing many things and integrating devices as well. We pay for that in speed loss.

My cure is to use something else.

Go to HP's site, mine is a Scanjet 6400C, the original drivers are for Win 98, I'm runnig XP now, so I had to get new drivers, download XP drivers, and load them on your machine also back them up onto CD-R , you should be OK then.

I knew this would stump the community.

Hey - thanks for the suggestions guys! all been tried before unfortunately with no change. this is one of the weirdest computer things I've seen - I mean they have like the head "special forces" tech guys from HP trying to figure it out and they can't yet... Crazy - Updated drivers, not having software or drivers start on boot... all that's been tried - doesn't change a thing. Still a matter of "Scanner Drivers Installed - Computer Problems Happen. Scanner Drivers removed - problems go away."
No exclamation marks on Devices or problems or anything. I mean, the scanner itself works fine when it's installed, it just causes those other problems. I'm thinking it's something in the registry - perhaps something that was tweaked by another program in the first couple of months of owning the computer that for some strange reason messed up the interaction with scanner drivers.
anyway, any other suggestions, I'm all ears...
Thanks!

This may sound silly but have you tried turning off any anti-virus program you might have before you install the driver. just a thought.

Another thought.

So you have tried everything suggested and then some ? Try some more things, e.g.

•Run chkdsk /R, then defrag.

•Let Windows manage your page file, or if already at that setting, change to Custom and try max at e.g. three times initial size.

Sure your computer is clean ? -No viruses, no parasites ? Try a full scan at HOUSECALL
