The Aug,26 editors poll asking "Do you own an HDTV with a built-in tuner?" is only adding to the confusion. (Is it a trick poll? :-))
HDTV = ATSC tuner(s) + 1280X720 min. resolution display
(The article did not even mention the resolution issue!)
Accordingly, there is no such thing as an HDTV without a digital tuner! HD Monitor yes, HDTV no!
Monitor/box architecture is OK while the technology is evolving and protects consumers against premature obsolescence. Remember when an EGA display card was an upgrade, VGA was still a year away?
My point is the building block technologies behind HDTV are now more less mature, so integration into a freestanding product is a natural evolution. Not to mention the market research that shows consumers want a turnkey product.
There has been alot of F.U.D. on this subject.
But you are correct to called a HDTV it must have a ATSC tuner builtin. If the TV doesn't have a ATSC tunner is just a HD mointor.
However the FCC is now mandating ATSC tuners so about 50% of the newer 2005 sets have them, and most of the 2006 will have them. John
