Printer installation problem

by Drjustsayno - 7/31/05 6:38 PM

My wife has Windows XP Home on an e-Machines PC. We had an old HP DeskJet 882c connected and working. After a virus cleaning a few months ago, we didn't connect the printer until now. Now when I try to connect and allow wXP to find drivers automatically, an error message as follows: Cannot Install this hardware" because "RPC server is unavailable". If I try to go to Start/Control panel/printers/add printer-I get message "Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running. If I try to install from CD-Windows encounters problem and needs to close. Wants to send error report. hpfiui.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. Restart. Can anyone please help? Thanx.

print spooler not working

by jmattesmd - 2/12/08 3:37 PM In reply to: (NT) print spooler not running, Windows XP by jmattesmd

I had the problems mentioned above. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer software solved the problem, but it was a little trickly, because the "uninstall" from my program list wouldn't work. But when I put in the CD for the printer, I found the uninstall icon on the CD, and this uninstalled everything. I could then reinstall (with the printer off and disconnected from the computer), and then everything worked fine.
I spent about 5 hours on this. The worst (most complex and unneccessarily dangerous) advice I got was from Microsooft bulletins ( eg., (324757, 919750, and 810894). How strange that I have to rely on unpaid good samaritans; why can't Miicrosoft montier these sites and provide a reasonable summary of solutions?
