Altlon VS Turion

by togus - 8/16/05 7:19 AM

I'm pretty much settled on buying a notebook with a 64 bit chip and have been going around and around trying to decide between an Athlon and a Turion equipt machine. I like the better battery life and lower weight of the Turion, but I wonder if I'd notice much reduction in performance between a machine with Turion 64 Ml-30 and an Athlon 3500+. I'd buy either machine with 512MB in one stick, planning on adding another 512 right away, a 60 G HD @ 5400 RPM, the 128MB video card, XP Pro and the bigger battery. I'm looking at HP/Compaq products.
I'll be doing alot of traveling during part of the year, doing online communication, doing some gaming (Call Of Duty), burning/playing CD's, digital photo storage and watching movies on DVD. I'd also be doing some low demand office type tasks, maintaining case records and that sort of thing. Any thoughts on this?

Not so much the CPU.

But the GPU is an issue from your games list. You need to consider laptops with real 3D chips and dedicated video memory. Battery time is dead on arrival since your GPU will suck power too.

GPU

Do you mean shared memory issue with the cards available on those machines, or the overall limitations of the GPU beyond memory? I'd hoped that installing a gig of RAM would ease that problem, am I wrong in that thinking? As to the power consumption, I'd only be gaming when plugged in to the wall.... but the GPU issue has been eating at me.

Adding RAM to a SHARED VIDEO memory system.

Will not offset the video system's issues.

You are more than welcome to test your theory, but I share it doesn't pay off. When you game, you may flame on shared video systems.

The GPU will eat more power than the shared video ram system even when not gaming...

For your consideration, look at the compaq r4000 with the 128 or 256 megabyte video card.

ZV 6000

I have a zv6000 with a Athelon 4000+ 1 GIG MEM AND 128MB VIDEO. It uses a good bit of battery I recommend buying the extra 12 cell battery, so that you have two. This machine is more of a desktop replacement, so its pretty heavy and hot (not to good for your lap unless you have a something in between.) If your looking for something a liitle more portable a Turion based machine might be better. It's never going to be perfect so you have to decide what you actually want.

ZV6000 vs Turion models

the zv6000 and the r4000 come with DEDICATED 128 meg video cards. they can share upto 128 MB more RAM from the system RAM to double the Video memory. I run Prince of Persia and Halo under 1024 X 768 and 800 * 600 respectively with all effects enabled with no problem. its a decent GPU for a laptop. Oh! and for thse of you who do not know, please check the ATI website to see why the ATI radeon Xpress was designed. It was for lower power consumption especially for the laptop models. In other words, the xpress series consumes less power than a redeon x300 and even lesser than a radeon x600. this is because it is capable of working with the main processor on the SSE power saving extensions.

Coming to he turions, they are definitely lighter and cooler and provide longer battery, but they cannot do more than 1 GB RAM in the HP models and come with a smaller screen. check the HP business model laptops too. they have some good offers/prices on them too.

Thanks for the reply. I do know about the shared memory issue, one of the reasons I'll buy a gig of RAM. I didn't know about the 1 gig limitation on HP, but I've been looking at the 14" Compaq, figuring to get it with a gig in one dimm. This is a tough coice for me, but the portability of the Turion model will likely overcome the desire to play games at a high level of detail.

1 GIG

DO YOU REALLY NEED MORE THAN ONE GIG OF MEMORY. IF YOU DO LET ME KNOW WHY.

I don't need it now, but a few years years ago I'd have said ''do I really need more that 256MB of RAM?''. It only costs a few bucks more to get a gig in one stick, then the option of a second gig is still there. Who knows what will happen to RAM demands when new software becomes available?
