running Norton Anit Virus

by mis_nomer2 - 8/12/05 5:32 AM In reply to: Are you running Norton? by jdn_texas

I am also running Norton and it takes my computer 3 minutes to complete a shut down. I intend to contact customer support at Norton and hopefully I won't have to completely remove it from my system because, it is a very good anti-virus program.

mis_nomer2, Open your Norton Antivirus Program and in your Advanced Options uncheck "Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down", then click OK.

Norton Not

by WilliamKazak - 8/12/05 6:41 AM In reply to: Are you running Norton? by jdn_texas

If your icons are slowly appearing, you might need a defrag. Also, swap memory sticks in and out and see what happens.
I use freeRam pro to auto-free my memory. Also, there is a free program called startup, which allows you more choices on what programs start up with your computer.
I have one computer that gets me to the logon much faster than the other. One computer takes longer to do the memory check.

Are you running Norton?

by aliensquirl - 8/13/05 10:28 AM In reply to: Are you running Norton? by jdn_texas

jdn_texas, I would think you possibly had Norton set to scan on startup. That will delay startup.

With Norton running continuously while the computer is on I don't see a need for startup scanning.

defrag

by Recycle_Bin - 8/11/05 10:51 PM In reply to: speeding up windows startup speed. by sourabh

Have you defragged your drive lately? Here's a tip from Microsoft on how to speed-up your computer's performance.

Yes, If your MFT is fragmented,it could delay startup. If so get a third party tool that defragments the MFT before windows startsup.

Boot-time performance

by msgale - 8/12/05 4:55 AM In reply to: speeding up windows startup speed. by sourabh

You use the phrase "it take too long to start and shutdown windows." What you don't say is the time more or less than before you added the memory? Have you measured the times? Of you measured the times, what are they? I really wish people stop blaming Symantec/Norton, I have run performance tests, none of which support the contention that Symantec/Norton uses excessive resources. I have also run defragmentation performance test, and found a less than ten percent performance penalty of a undefragmented drive. This is why I defragment every February 29th. My guess, and is is just a guess based upon my experience with laptops is the weakest line is your hard disk. Typical laptop disks are 4,200 RPM, some 5,400 RPM and a very few 7,200 RPM. Typical desktop disks are 7,200 RPM and some are as high as 15,000 RPM

msgale is correct

by dbreaux - 8/12/05 6:14 AM In reply to: Boot-time performance by msgale

I recently replaced the stock 4200 rpm drive in my Gateway notebook with the Hitachi 7200 rpm drive and it made a significant difference.

windodws startup

by maggiedev - 8/12/05 5:11 AM In reply to: speeding up windows startup speed. by sourabh

i had the same problem last year. every time i started up it was a slow process. i thought something was broken. i called a tech and he advised that i go to run, msconfig and then to start up. he also advised i disable everything except my security system. i clear all rechecked security system box, rebooted and my computer runs much faster. i did not need all those processes running all the time. i can access them as i need them. the tech also advised i go back to startup at least once a month to clear it again as they boxes just get checked occasionally for some reason i don't pretend to understand. i clear them on a regular basis, my computer runs much faster and it hurts nothing as i lose nothing. hope this helps you. sure did help me.
i run windows xp on a hp computer that is 4 years old.

Windows start up speed

by morninglory - 8/18/05 6:14 PM In reply to: windodws startup by maggiedev

Hi Maggiedev, I too have S-L-O-W start up in Windows
XP. I read your post & did what you said and when I restarted my computer I got a msg. telling me that I had re-configured my start up mode and pratically commanding me to go back and change it to "normal" start up. So I did. Is Bill Gates hiding in my computer? LOL. Thanks for any advice!

System Configuration (msconfig)

by pro2go - 8/12/05 5:28 AM In reply to: speeding up windows startup speed. by sourabh

First, go to http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/ and download his newest Startup.exe (about 1/3 of the way down the page). Once you have the .exe, open it and then minimize it.

Click on START and then RUN. Type in msconfig and then click OK. When a panel appears on your screen, click on the upper right TAB that says STARTUP. Now toggle back and forth from the STARTUP.exe and the list of items in the System Startup. Find your items and look for the recommendations in the STARTUP.exe. This guy is reputable and I use his STARTUP.exe all the time when I help other people with their computers. Good luck!
