IBM is primarily business oriented but college students and consumers do use them if they value the durability of the notebooks, want a smaller LCD in many cases, and value IBM's support (not as good as Apple but tops in PC notebooks).

So, you will find it harder to get discounts as IBM does not have a consumer division (HP and Toshiba business lines don't have the discounts of the consumer lines either).

Some portal websites have discounts if you order through them to the manufacturer website so check that. Fatcash, for instance, offers 3% on an HP and other brands and sometimes more (deferred payment).

I know this is coming pretty late, but if you are enrolled in college, check with your IT services department or Campus Computer Store to check on any educational discounts you may receive for purchasing a TP. Both my undergrad and grad schools have deals with IBM. Some of the discounts are really good. To my knowledge, they offer discounts on both customizable and already configured systems.

I find the Dell has some student packages. Ask there.

Check with your admin office or book store. You might also check the IBM Education webpage for deals...though the content there looks to be institutional rather than student oriented.

When I bought a ThinkPad last year, I remember that they had different eductional discounts for different states. The question is do they still have those discounts now that Lenovo has taken over sales of ThinkPads and do they have a good discount in your state. Check out this web page to learn more. You'll be asked to input your state then they'll show you their discounts for that state.
